OK, but "consumers" are still accustomed to certain expectations regarding user control. They just don't know it. I expect there will be lots of "but why doesn't it do things like my computer" frustrations. Err, questions.

i work on a mac daddy Power Mac all day, and love it to bits. i own a Macbook for home/business, and i'm a die hard iPod fanatic (i can't live without it). i would own an iPhone, but they're a joke, so i went the Android route.

i do not like limitations, hence my issues with the iPhone and iPad.

Apple should grab Neil Stephenson and start work on a multimedia version of The Diamond Age immediately.

I bet Apple Linux could easly write their own code to make a new flash player, but that would probably be a copyright violation.

I believe it is Adobe dropping the ball. Not necessarily making it work on a mobile screen but just making it less buggy all around.

But I also think that Jobs has an abundance of hate for Flash that won't go away anytime soon, even if they fix it.

yeah this might be the death of flash, apple has pretty much said that it doesnt want it on its mobile products, hurts battery life, unstable, hackable, etc. and while it sucks somewhat i think it will force the other alternatives to step up (H.264 etc)

im pretty sure this was apples decision as adobe would be more than happy to have this usable on ipad/iphone

I wouldn't be so sure that this is the "death of flash". It's used for way more than video compression, so you need more than H264 or whatever to "step up". Although Flash video compression is great, and competitors do need to step up in that respect.

Flash is basically a relatively easy way for designers - people who aren't particularly code savvy - to create more robust and engaging interactivity in websites. And games. It's also really good for putting together straight, traditional animation - remember the abundance of Flash cartoons when it first became popular? Flash is still used pretty commonly as an animation tool and may still be if a competitor can manage to "kill" it on the web front.

And don't forget that the PC market is still way bigger than Apple's. Plus, Flash still works on regular Macs. It'll be interesting to see who this hurts more, Adobe or Apple.
