very true.

I watched Touch of Evil last night for the first time. Great movie.

Yeah, a great movie almost ruined by Charlton Heston's godawful acting.

Good movie. I like how open-ended it was, and apparently this was a huge improvement over the book it was taken from. My wife did a little reading about the differences between the movie and the book, and the whole "less is more" approach did wonders for this story.

I don't know why, but I didn't like this movie at all.

I started watching Doubt, but strangely enough, all the chapters on the DVD I got from Netflix are in mixed up order. I've never had that happen before. It took me about 50 minutes to notice that the story wasn't making logical sense and that characters were talking about things that didn't happen until much later on. What I saw was really good though...I'm eagerly waiting to get a correct copy.

Watched a couple of flicks I've been meaning to get under my belt - Tokyo Zombie and Frontier(s).

Tokyo Zombie was billed as a Japanese Shawn of the Dead - a horrible and misleading tagline. It's not as funny, nor are the characters as likeable. The zombie action is few and far between and is closer to a comedic Land of the Dead - and just as shit-tacular. Definitely a let-down.

Frontier(s), however, was much better than I'd anticipated. Basically, it's a French movie that takes your general 'isolated house' + 'chop and slop' theme of your standard horror/slasher - a la Texas Chainsaw, Motel Hell or House of 1000 Corpses and frames it in the recent French race riots. It worked on a lot of levels, the characters were engaging and the 'villains' were an inbred family of Nazi's living on the border of France and Holland. There's a little too much use of the 'Bourne'-style shaky cam at times, but the gore is well done, the kills interesting, and the whole dynamic of it worked for me. It was pretty stomach churning at points, but it definitely came out on top of the latest batch of movies I've seen.

Oh yeah, I sat down with a region 0, English subbed version of Dead Snow. When this hits US theatres, it's a must-see for any Zombie-movie fans. The first half plays like a drawn out teen-slasher flick with tons of exposition, bad acting, and false scares. When the Nazi Zombies show up, it's awesome. It's got lots of homages to popular horror flicks and delivers on the Zombie gore. This one is HIGHLY recommended.

And yeah - the praise for Let The Right One In is dead on. Another great foreign horror/creepy flick. Great story, well executed.

New York Doll – I’m sure a lot of you have seen this. Documentary about the New York Dolls, which focuses primarily on their bassist, Arthur “Killerâ€

I watched The Thin Blue Line on Friday night, my first Errol Morris film. I'm a sucker for that kind of doc, and its cool that it ultimately led to the wrongly imprisoned guy getting let out.

Anyone have any other Errol Morris film recs?

I've seen The Fog of War, The Thin Blue Line and Fast Cheap and Out of Control. The first two are brilliant. The last one-- kinda boring.

I really don't like Errol Morris's style at all. It's pretty cheesy.

I kind of agree, but I think the core of Fog of War, the actual interview and subject, are enough to save it from a heavy-handed style.

saw Star Trek. Liked it well enough.

Also watched a few Preston Sturges flicks because John Swartzwelder loves them. They're worth the hour a piece.

Better than I expected. The old lady at the end was probably the best part.

Shogun Assassin...best movie about a bad-ass middle-aged man with a paunch, his adorable son, and a flailing menagerie of ninjas.

Not sure if you are aware of the history, but I highly recommend you check out the original 6 flicks that bits and pieces were taken from to make this. This is good, but does not do the original 6 flicks justice. I watched them all back to back one week and it was well worth it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lone_Wolf_and_Cub

Watched "Let the Right One in " last week and was "Meh" towards it. With all the hype I expected more, but it didn't totally suck.

Watched the 3rd Underworld yesterday, "Rise of the Lichans". It started it out cool, but the story by the end was a little drawn, but what do you expect from a flick like that ??

haha...well, I should have explained that post a little more...it was pretty bad, but it wasn't as awful I expected it to be. Mark Wahlberg was really atrocious, however, I thought the camera work and how the movie looked overall was pretty cool. I purposefully ignored the corny acting and stupid shit that was going on and looked at it as a "B" movie which was Shamalan's idea.

Bort's Essential Jackie Chan Movies

in somewhat chronological order (not sure about (HK/USA release dates)

Project A
(1983) The first old school JC film that's worth watching. I know him and Sammo Hung did a bunch of stuff together, but this movie shows them at their dynamic-duo best. Great fights and stunts - really creative stuff for it's time. Also this movie is unique because it has some massive brawls in it. Usually it's just Jackie vs. a gang, but in this movie there are multiple fighters doing stuff all at once.

Police Story
(1985) I guess this is his classic huge hit (spawning a half dozen or so sequels). The original is the best though. Cute comedy bits and an i.nteresting take on the "renegade/hero" cop and his conflicts with superiors who want to "do things by the book." But really the fights and the stunts in this movie are awesome and sometimes brutal. Never has so much glass been shattered in a more entertaining way.

Operation Condor (1991) Again, this is a take on Indiana Jones, but with Jackie Chan inserted into the picture. This movie has a lot going for it. First, the story moves along really quickly. No pauses for romance (despite there being 3 girls/damsels/sidekicks), and the comedy is integrated into the action (unlike Police Story, which keeps the comedy and fighting separate). Just a fun flick that has all the typical elements of a JC movie but the A-games of each are crammed all together.

The Legend of Drunken Master (1994) My favorite Chan film, heck one of my favs of all time no matter what. Good story, awesome fights (and the fights are plentiful), great characters. Can't say enough good things about it (so I'll just stop now).

Rumble In The Bronx 1995 - Yaay, American audiences now know of him other than being that guy in the Cannonball Run movies! A cool beat 'em up flick and one of the finest examples of Chan being "just a guy" rather than a hero/adventurer/cop, and also a great showcase of how Chan interacts with his environment when fighting.

Who Am I?
(1998) A cool plot that mixes the Jackie Chan formula with the Bourne Identity. Great stunts here and the final rooftop fight scene is one of JC's best.

ok gotta go. i like a bunch of Chan movies, but there are the top whatever i'd recommend.

Cool... I'm going to see it tonight and I've also got highish expectations. Except now they're a little higher than highish, so it may just meet my new level of highish expectations!!!
