really enjoyed it. guys night out with some burgers, beers, shots and a movie. really good night. the movie was better than expected.....and i went in with highish expectations.

Cool... I'm going to see it tonight and I've also got highish expectations. Except now they're a little higher than highish, so it may just meet my new level of highish expectations!!!

Just got back from this and it's really really funny. Perfect hot summer day at the movies material. And the return of Heather Graham's knockers to the big screen - no way that's a bad thing.

Check it out if you're in any way interested by the trailers.

Watched two movies last night:
Started off the evening by putting in Tropic Thunder, which I've seen before but is always a good time. Such a ridiculous(ly awesome) movie.

Then went to the theater to see:
Image
The Hangover
...which was absolutely hilarious. I thought the trailer looked amusing, but figured that all the funny stuff was probably already spoiled. WRONG. Beginning to end amusement.

I probably won't make it to the theater, but you're like the 5th person TODAY that has told me about how awesome this movie was.

Here's a further thought.

Todd Phillips is mostly of thought of as Judd Apatow Jr. in terms of his comedy execution and stature, but there's an important difference.
Apatow movies (by which I mean anything he directs, producers or has a hand in) go to great lengths to both avoid stock character types (or at least twist them around a bit) and not put them in well-worn story recipes. A lot of times that works, but his movies always go back to formula in the third act which winds up kinda disappointing.

Phillips' high-water comedies on the other hand (Old School, Road Trip, The Hangover) use stock character types and just make them as personable as possible. And the stories are all variations on things we've seen before, with the funny turned up as high as possible. So there's certainly formula going on, but they're done so well it's forgivable.

Both work. But Phillips takes the more direct route, cutting out about 20 or so minutes of character exposition and packing more laughs in instead.

The Hangover is one step above The Hills Have Eyes II in terms of how bad it is. I hated nearly every second of it. Zach Galifinakis is the only redeeming aspect of this film and when that's the case, you can count on a horribly unfunny comedy. I have given Phillips his fair chance. No more for me.

No. I just really thought it was atrocious.

So I watched Martyrs the other night. I'd been warned that the movie takes an abrupt turn and gets REALLY disturbing. Knowing this, I made one of the worst decisions of my life - I ate a couple of mushroom chocolates. I ate them and pushed play.

I don't think I could've planned it better/worse. They kicked in right around the 'twist' and made the whole second half of the movie even more disturbing and terrifying.

I'm not going to give much away about the movie, but suffice it to say: it's disturbing. You start with a 'revenge' movie with some serious violence and craziness and then it goes all haywire.

It changed the course of my evening - I was planning on watching a few more horror movies, but bailed at that point and listened to some happy music to try and purge my brain.

All that being said - I really liked it and would see it again. I just need to make sure that I'm 'straight' when I see it next time.

Pulled up Boomerang online via Netflix two nights ago to kill time, nd man I forgot how many good scenes there are in that film. Some really bad ones too (the entire ending) but still. Mushroom vest, mushroom belt.

Watched a few on Netflix Watch Instantly the other day:

Cocaine Cowboys 2: Hustlin' with the Godmother was boring and I wouldn't recommend it. Disappointing after the excellent Cocaine Cowboys (this one even had the same people behind it).

Zach Galifianakis: Live at the Purple Onion was really funny to me. First time I had really seen his stand-up act, but I was laughing pretty hard at times. Other times it devolved into wtf? territory but overall it was good.

away we go. this was pretty good. all of my hesitations about the actors were put to rest about 20 minutes into it. the story kinda fell apart near the end, like, "well, we have to wrap this up. let's just kinda go in this direction." but it was fine enough up until then. allison janney was hilarious. between her and a little kid at a hotel, i laughed harder than anything else i've seen recently.

the hangover. i went with a few coworkers yesterday afternoon. we enjoyed it. i know what i'm going into with a movie like this - a few cheap laughs to drive a story. it worked.

I saw Twilight for the first time the other night. Made me want to go to the PacNW and be turned by vampyre into a creature of the night.

You need to do this with Jacob's Ladder.

you're right. that trailer is edited to look very interesting. but my advice would be to not read anymore about moon and go into it knowing as little about it as possible. it's got a few "what the fuck is going on?" moments, but it's really not that bad overall. i just feel like the trailer may give some people the wrong impression about what kind of movie it is.

Brutal, and loved the color/cinematography.

Vinnie Jones fascinates me. I should check it out.
