sounds great to me
don't think neil was ever happy with the sound of harvest moon - nor especially the pre-remaster of 'neil young' – so maybe this'll be a truer take...
still haven't heard or seen the archives...

Yeah, I'm looking forward to this as I'm really like Harvest Moon a lot. I have the Archives sitting in front of me but am still sans Blu-Ray so it's ornamental at the moment.

Yeah, I've opened them all up, browsed the very nice leather bound book it came with, downloaded the MP3s and am contemplating burning a few to discs, played the Canterbury dvd a few times. Hell, already it's eaten up a lot of time and I haven't even played the goddamn BRDs yet.

It also came with a Whisky a Go Go notepad that says:

If you are a speaking pad - why don't you say something?!?!?!?

Uhh?"

Cool. I'll probably snag all 4 at some point.

Never owned a copy of the s/t, and I don't really like it. But what the hell.

You know I used to feel the same way, and thought at $5, why not just pick up Neil Young and give it another shot. I'm glad I did because I think it really benefited the most from the remaster. While still not a great album, I enjoyed it more than I have previously. Maybe just the fuller sound or maybe just placebo. Who knows.

So I picked up the remastered Neil Young, and I have to say, it is better than I remembered. I'd probably have to listen the older version back to back with this one to really know how much the remaster improved it, but I'm really not as bothered with the production on it as I thought I had been before. It just seems like your typical multi-tracked rock record, which of course is atypical for Neil Young, but it's definitely worth owning and really stands up pretty well to all but his best '70s albums, I think.

Definitely looking forward to the new live disc, btw.

Deej, how do you feel about sharing some of those mp3s, at least of the material not released individually like the live archives?

Bump for anyone interested. They're going up now.

I finally got the Blu-Ray player and am currently blowing my mind watching The Archives. Anyone who's a geek about this guy needs to get this pronto.

I just put this one for the first time and it's got some genius scenes. Best so far:

Neil with Stills, Nash and a few others sitting around getting high and talking about getting high. Graham Nash says "hey man, Big Tobacco has already registered and trademarked the name 'Acapulco Gold'...or so Crosby tells me"

I want to see this so bad. I have the vinyl, and every time I listen, I'm just thinking whats on the film. I wish they would release it separately.

The film is pretty strange; it starts out almost as a doc with Neil et al. visiting a radio station, spliced in with some old footage with Buffalo Springfield on the Smothers Brothers show, then you get a vignette of sorts of an weird hippie guy walking through the desert, then back to the regular doc with CSN, more footage with him and Carrie smoking cigarettes on his car, more of the weird hippie wandering around the city, back to Neil visiting an auto wrecking yard where he finds Lyndon Johnson's old car, some more CSNY footage in the barn playing live, then in the barn and finally it just shifts to epic weirdness, no more doc really just all these odd characters appearing in and around his farm, masked guys on horses (from the album cover) roaming around, an Anglican bishop being pushed in a wheelchair by a German officer and companion, that kind of thing. I'm not arty enough to discern any real meaning. Perhaps there's none, I don't know. It was fun to watch.

Dreamin' Man pushed back

http://www.thrasherswheat.org/2009/11/neil-youngs-17th-cd-release-of-year.html

Quote:
Last August, we reported on a new Neil Young album "Dreamin' Man" scheduled for release today, November 3. This would mark Neil's 17th CD release of the year, which includes the 10 disc Archives set, Fork in the Road, the Booker T. collaboration "Potato Hole" and reissues of Neil Young, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, After the Goldrush and Harvest .

That Neil. Such a slacker.

Now comes word that DREAMIN' MAN, Neil Young Archives Performance Series #12, will be released on or about December 8, roughly 17 years after the original release of Harvest Moon.

A closer look at Harvest Moon songs, all performed solo acoustic before the release of Harvest Moon, DREAMIN' MAN contains intimate live performances recorded in concert halls during 1992.

Neil Young's 1992 "Harvest Moon" was the followup to his most commercially successful album "Harvest" - some 20 years later.

"Harvest Moon" was recorded with many of the same original musicians who appeared on "Harvest", such as Ben Keith, on pedal steel guitar, and Linda Rondstadt and James Taylor on backing vocals. The intentional sequel nature of "Harvest Moon" created high expectations which for the most part were fulfilled. The album was even accompanied with music videos and extensive interviews with the normally reticent Young himself.

But on a Canadian radio interview, Young denied that 'Harvest Moon' was a sequel to 'Harvest':

"The whole idea of following up the 'Harvest' album is something that's contrived more from the standpoint of record companies, and mostly questions.

You know, people see the correlation between the two, and it's kind of a plus to be able to refer back 20 years and see the same people and do that. But the thrust of the albums is different, even though the subject matter is similar, so I tend to shy away more from comparisons between them - they're reference points for one another.

I mean, people who have never heard of 'Harvest' may really like Harvest Moon and may end up referring back to 'Harvest' because of all this conversation about how the two of them go together..."

Naturally, there's much speculation over on rust about what all of this might mean? Afterall, NY PS#12?!? So what happened to everything in between?

Could this possibly mean that the next NYA volume will be #4 or #5??? That would be quite the Shakey move to not to followup Vol#1 with #2.

The track listing for Dreamin' Man:

1. Dreamin' Man
2. Such a Woman
3. Old King Rap
4. Old King
5. One of These Days
6. Harvest Moon
7. You and Me
8. From Hank to Hendrix
9. Unknown Legend
10. Natural Beauty
11. War of Man

Lastly, no word on a Blu-Ray release. Or any news on Toast for that matter.

So. Neil's 17th CD release of the year. Hey, it's only November. 2 more months of '09. Maybe a film? Oh yeah..... Trunk Show.

Neil. slacker.

bummer.

Great record that I haven't played in a while, either. My copy is pretty badly scratched, so it looks like it's time to get a new one.

I'm playing Dreamin' Man right now. While it may be inessential relative to some of the Archives we've heard this year, it really is a great set of songs, particularly 'You And Me', 'From Hank to Hendrix'; They're great live, I think it feels a bit more intimate than the studio album. It's kind of freaking me out a bit that these songs are nearly 20 years old.
