Double Feature:

No Country For Old Men -- not my favorite Coen Bros. film, but worth seeing a second time. I missed that when he went to his room, he was practising for when he went into the room with the Mexicans.

Fargo -- only the second time I saw it. The asian guy was still awkward, I think they just stuck him in so that they could have an asian guy with That Accent. And why is it called Fargo? Most of it takes place in Brainerd.

Did you notice the case of money was very similar, if not exactly the same?

The Secret Life of Words

Other than the fact that I think Sarah Polley is one of the most talented actresses working today, this film has a lot going for it. Brilliant story that winds and intertwines itself in your head until at just the right moment director/writer, Isabel Coixet decides to let you in on who Hanna is. Simply sublime lensing by Jean-Claude Larrieu, with expressive lighting and a color palette to live for.

The film also stars Tim Robbins as a burn victim, who has a bit of mystery to himself as well. He puts forth the effort, and really, the film doesn't seem to be enhanced, or depreciated because of his appearance. Polley is the true gem here. Also in the cast is Javier Cámara, who you might remember (sans-beard) from Talk to Her. Again, he adds a certain spice to a film that already is quite flavorful.

This is my second outing with the team of Polley, Coixet and Larrieu. The other being "My Life Without Me", which again seems to jump off the screen to shake you hard to your core.

"Secret Life..." is a bit of an emotional downward spiral towards the end. The important point though, is the poignant message that seems just under the surface when we learn the full story. Highly recommended.

No Country For Old Men
Superbad (surprisingly for the first time)

Both were good. I was more impressed with No Country For Old Men, especially due to the fact that my Dad had rented it and wanted to watch it saturday when we were at his place.
Superbad was funny, but I still somehow enjoy Knocked Up alot more, maybe it is my age.

I liked this quite a bit, the ending left a little to be desired, but it was a solid flick.

I thought she was outstanding in Go!, what else do I need to see by her, what are some of her other best works? I've already put Secret Life Of Words on my list.

Nah. The asian guy is there for a reason. Once she gets the call from her friend letting her know his whole story was bullshit, she starts to question whether William H. Macy is full of shit too. This causes her to go back to the dealership for one last talk.

Recently saw:

Once: Much to my amazement, I absolutely loved this movie. I've already watched it twice and plan on buying the soundtrack. If you like the songs, you'll love the movie. And I thought the acting was pretty solid too.

Half Nelson: Liked this a lot too. Gosling has the acting goods and I thought the script didn't puss out like I thought it would.

No shit! Thanks for that, I actually hadn't figured that out.

Last weekend I caught Downfall on cable. Great movie that, while humanizing Hitler to some degree, also show the craziness of the end of the WWII in Berlin. As it seems to be rooted mostly in fact, the actions of the higher ranking Nazis in the bunker is mind-blowing.

Also, I rented Terror's Advocate and enjoyed seeing another perspective of the 'terrorist' discussion. Definitely not an uplifter and the subject of the documentary seems like something of an egotistical scumbag, then again he's a lawyer with an agenda.

Sweet Hereafter
My Life Without Me
Dawn of the Dead remake--despite it being a horror film, she was one of the highlights

she was also in beowulf and grendel. not that anyone other than me has seen this film. i watched it for two reasons: (a) gerard butler is a munchy nugget, especially with long hair and a sword; and (b) i'm a beowulf freak. i really can't help it. hwæt.

she was good... although her part in the storyline was completely and utterly ridiculous.

In Bruges... Reminded me of The Matador, though with a role-reversal -- the younger marksman was unhinged, while the older one was hardbitten but in control of his game. Great scenery. & dwarves/midgets!

I saw 30 Days of Night last night ($1 rental from Kroger).

I really don't see why people trashed this movie so much. High expectations, I guess? I thought it was alright. Pretty silly, but I never like vampire movies. This one was almost more of a zombie movie in spirit (more about survival) which was a good thing.

This pretty much sums up how I felt about this movie. All my horror movie friends hated it and I think that lowered my expectations to the point where I could like it.

Red Without Blue (2007).

Pretty interesting doc that definitely gives thought to the idea that you are born with certain sexual leanings. 2 brothers, twins, born in Montana--both gay. One lives life as a man, the other as a woman. There was a lot of strife in their lives, and the doc does a pretty good job of following them and laying much of their troubles on the table.
