Well, one could make an argument that such conversations permeating our culture merely serve to reinforce the increasingly impossible beauty standards we hold women to...and that we are increasingly hold men to as well nowadays by the way. I mean, if a woman who looks like that comes in for harsh criticism from your average Joe, what's a real woman supposed to think about herself? And sure, easy to say...oh, but it's just a casual few remarks on a message board. That may be true, but what about the cumulative effect of thousands upon thousands such remarks and conversations going on all over the place every day?

I would say that it's more the way the magazine present woman than anything we could say. Take a look at what a celebrity looks like in real life as opposed to what they look like in a magazine.

You must know different women than I do because most all of the sex-positive feminist women I have known have zero issue with all kinds of fucking. And the issues any of them have had with the types of women you mention are more along the lines of having issues with people who just blindly and easily accept societal conventions of a woman's place and that sort of thing and have nothign to do with slut-shaming or critisizing their sexuality, especially what they do in the privacy of their own bedroom, or backseat, or airplane bathroom, or public park in the bushes at night...or...wherever.

I totally agree with your last line that as long as it is all consensual it's all fine. I just don't know many, or really any, sex-positive feminist women who don't feel the same way.

I get what you're saying but a woman would have to have pretty low self esteem to start with to get down about her own looks based on a bunch of geeks essentially saying that they prefer to jerk it to one celebrity rather than another.

Well, I don't really think this little message board is as much a cause of such things as it is a symptom of those sorts of problems. If society did not find it acceptable to dissect women with a ridiculously critical eye based on their physical appearances, these sorts of conversations would never really come up in the first place. And, it is not just women with low-self esteem who are affected by this strong undercurrent present in out culture. Most women are at least affected in some way, be it a need to buy make-up to cover the wrinkles, or to diet to shave off an extra five pounds...whatever. No way is this a problem only affecting a sliver of women with bad self-image issues.

Sad thing in my mind too is that as a society, instead of figuring out this is a poor way to treat women, the best we seem to be figuring out as far as improving on equality in this shit is that we are starting to hold men to an increasingly ridiculous standard as well, which is why you see dramatic jumps in male eating disorders and other similar problems that have traditionally been considered female health issues.
