Thanks. Yeah, I feel like it's fourth leg of the table here with these three Bowie albums so I might as well check it out after more or less ignoring it forever.

That just makes me realize doing one of these for Iggy would an excellent idea.

I want to do Iggy soon so leave him out of this thread.

I've been unable to listen to a single album all week because I'm out of town so I'll have to play catch-up on the weekend. I've really been interested in playing the Berlin albums as it's been awhile since I've heard them.

Also, since Station to Station came up I've had TVC15 in my head.

So I guess I don't like Lodger as much as I thought I did, but I still prefer it to "Heroes". The first four tracks are pretty mediocre, but then the next four are awesome. "Look Back in Anger" and "Boys Keep Swinging", in particular. The last two are decent.

I guess I used to like "African Night Flight" and maybe "Yassassin", but this time through they did nothing for me.

DumpJack, pretty much anytime I see the title "TVC 15", I get that song stuck in my head, and that's been happening ever since I first bought that album seven or eight years ago.

I actually like all of these fine enough, but don't quite get why these are transcendent when it is OBVIOUS that Ziggy/Aladdin Sane are the peak of his performance as a rock and roll artist.

David Bowie returned to relatively conventional rock & roll with Scary Monsters, an album that effectively acts as an encapsulation of all his '70s experiments. Reworking glam rock themes with avant-garde synth flourishes, and reversing the process as well, Bowie creates dense but accessible music throughout Scary Monsters. Though it doesn't have the vision of his other classic records, it wasn't designed to break new ground -- it was created as the culmination of Bowie's experimental genre-shifting of the '70s. As a result, Scary Monsters is Bowie's last great album. While the music isn't far removed from the post-punk of the early '80s, it does sound fresh, hip, and contemporary, which is something Bowie lost over the course of the '80s. [Rykodisc's 1992 reissue includes re-recorded versions of "Space Oddity" and "Panic in Detroit," the Japanese single "Crystal Japan," and the British single "Alabama Song."]

Scary Monsters is the last Bowie album that own not counting the Tin Machine album (is that going to be included in this? - it should be). It's a solid album from start to finish and one of my favorites. It's better than the two preceding it, but not better than Low or Station to Station. Really, the quality of songs here is so consistent that I don't even have any particular favorites. I enjoy the whole thing equally.

Aside from a few scattered songs on the next album or two, this is pretty much it for classic Bowie.

I didn't get to this one today so I'll have to catch up and still have some parting shots on the Berlin Trilogy.

Tomorrow should be dedicated to discussing how fucking awesome "Under Pressure" is.

After summing up his maverick tendencies on Scary Monsters, David Bowie aimed for the mainstream with Let's Dance. Hiring Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers as a co-producer, Bowie created a stylish, synthesized post-disco dance music that was equally informed by classic soul and the emerging new romantic subgenre of new wave, which was ironically heavily inspired by Bowie himself. Let's Dance comes tearing out of the date, propulsed by the skittering "Modern Love," the seductively menacing "China Girl," and the brittle funk of the title track. All three songs became international hits, and for good reason -- they're catchy, accessible pop songs that have just enough of an alien edge to make them distinctive. However, that careful balance is quickly thrown off by a succession of pleasant but unremarkable plastic soul workouts. "Cat People" and a cover of Metro's "Criminal World" are relatively strong songs, but the remainder of the album indicates that Bowie was entering a songwriting slump. However, the three hits were enough to make the album a massive hit, and their power hasn't diminished over the years, even if the rest of the record sounds like an artifact.

I no longer desire balls across the nose.

Realistically, there's no way I can listen to the song 'Let's Dance' ever again. The rest is just academic.

I never realized that "Modern Love" and "Under Pressure" were on the same album....

If 11 year old GAR had known this, I could have been a flaming nonce. Two of my favorite "pop" songs of all time.

It wasn't on the original release. It was added many years later. It was a single released a few years prior to Let's Dance.

No mention at all of Stevie Ray Vaughn playing on this one?

"Modern Love" is one HELL of a single...I own this album but can't remember the last time I listened to anything beyond that.

On the basis of Tonight, it appears that David Bowie didn't have a clear idea of how to follow the platinum success of Let's Dance. Instead of breaking away from the stylized pop of "Let's Dance" and "China Girl," Bowie delivers another record in the same style. Apart from the single "Blue Jean," none of the material equals the songs on Let's Dance, but it's appealing pop-soul and dance stylings helped make Tonight another platinum success.
