They gotta bring up the dude from Richmond Gwinnett who is lighting shit up as a starter, amirite?

Not sure if you caught Jonah Keri's Trade Deadline Power Rankings on Grantland but he had the Bravos at #1

When you've got an army of indefatigable news hounds filing 86 blog posts and 400 tweets a day, you can control the narrative. That's not to say that Buster Olney, Ken Rosenthal, and other hard-working baseball reporters are easily duped. They know what can happen as the deadline approaches, so they double-check and triple-check every rumor to verify its veracity. But even with those safeguards, a team can still game the system. Place a call to an anonymous front office exec with loose lips. Talk up the value of a player you might not actually want. Maybe make a semi-legitimate phone call or two to create the illusion of interest.

Whatever tactics the Braves deployed, they sure as hell worked. For all the talk about advanced statistics catching on, there are plenty of teams who overvalue some players and undervalue others for the wrong reasons. Likewise, some members of the working press are still easily seduced by, say, Triple Crown stats. Thus, we get the illusion that Hunter Pence is the most valuable available position player at the trade deadline. Never mind that Pence is striking out a career-high level, owes his .306 batting average (career .290) to a sky-high .365 batting average on balls in play (career .326), and that he's roughly an average defender at a corner outfield spot (-3.1 UZR this year, though Pence has been a plus guy in the past, so we might split the difference here).

The Braves wisely drove up the price on Pence, and Carlos Beltran, so their NL rivals will be forced to give up top prospects to get them. Then just as nearly every contender with an outfield need had shot their wad, Atlanta swooped in and nabbed Michael Bourn, a lightning-fast center fielder who's benefited from some good luck himself (.383 BABIP) but still gets enough of a boost from his on-base skills, blazing speed, and superior defense at a premium position to rank eighth among National League outfielders in Wins Above Replacement. Better yet, the Braves got their man for four young players whose projections range from meh to feh.

It's strange to me though that Keri would ding Pence based on a single year's UZR. Even the biggest advocates of defensive stats say that they are flukey when looked at in small samples (eg 1 year) especially for outfielders. WAR gives equal weight to defense so saying Bourn has outWAR'd Pence this year is not all that meaningful if it is primarily due to Pence's UZR. I didn't really check but got that impression from the article.

That doesn't change that Atl stole Bourn though. Wade should have been able to get more for him. Definitely a great deal for Atl.

Insane game last night with Giants@Braves.

2 outs, bases loaded, down a run, a rookie batting and a 1-2 count against Brian Wilson.

The rookie of course singles in 2 runs to win the game.

Braves have 4 (now 3 left) with the Giants and then 3 with the DBacks. Wild card race is in full swing this week.

Also, Cubs fans, why don't the Cubs just freaking wash their hands of Zambrano?

Are they not tired of this guys bullshit?

He's (Jonah Keri) got the Brewers ranked just ahead of the Braves in his most recent article on the "Six teams you don't want to face in the playoffs"

This is strange territory as a Brewers fan...right now we are 7 games clear of the Cards and it feels pretty awesome. We had a great run in 08', but just squeaked in to the playoffs then, it year feels different this year.

He also has the Angels on that list, who are about as likely to make the playoffs right now as the Astros.

If teams are lining up wanting to face the Rangers in the playoffs, they are in for a rude fucking awakening...

Apparently you missed reading his introductory blurb, in which he says:

"Second, a favorite can't be a spoiler. A spoiler should be a team with a low payroll, or merely an outside shot at winning the whole thing, that screws up another team's run. That means the Phillies and Red Sox, the best teams in their respective leagues, are out. If the playoffs started today, the Yankees would be a wild card, but they're a wild card on a 99-win pace with a $207 million payroll. They're out, too. The Giants aren't even in first place, but they're the defending champs. They're out. The Rangers might finish with a worse record than either league's wild card — but they also won the AL pennant last year, dealt for two elite relief pitchers at the deadline, and convinced plenty of smart people that they're a great bet to get back to the World Series this year. They're out, too."

They also might finish with the best record in the American League.

Sad day in Birdland yesterday.

RIP Flanny.

What the fuck was I thinking?!?!?

Mark my words right now today here at this very moment:

The Rangers will NOT make the playoffs.

yeah, this was a horrible call by mlb. i saw their reasoning that they can't just have any mlb team bucking uniform convention whenever there's a tragedy. well, why not? if there's a hurricane or a tornado in that metro area, why shouldn't a local professional sport team show their support for the first responders? i mean, obviously, this comes down to shop.mlb.com not selling nypd/fd/ems/etc merchandise.

The Nationals did it after the Virginia Tech massacre, wore burgundy & gold VT hats that one of the players had picked up from Dick's or some other sporting-goods outlet.

Last time the Brewers won the division title, I was 2...so freaking cool to see what went down in Milwaukee tonight, wish I could have been there. Hoping to score playoff tickets.

Sorry BoSox folks, but I'm elated. This is the closest I'm going to get to a playoff/WS joy for awhile.

Crazy night. It's amazing how fun a night like this is when your team has either wrapped up a spot or is so far out of it. Feel bad for Braves fans tonight...not quite as bad for Sox fans because their team would have absolutely been massacred in the playoffs and i'm sure they know it.
