yeah, in the vocal approach, i'd say they share a lot of similarities. These guys have a bigger production budget maybe, if those are real strings etc...

Tame Impala has a trippy mini-site for the record. Posted up today:

the "gallery" offers a bunch of different versions of the album cover

Simply put, Tame Impala is the Aussie Dungen. I mean their whole "sound" is almost exactly that of Dungen, mixed with some Abbey Road influence.

another one people should be on the look out for:

DustyGroove Wrote:
Andre Williams gives us what we need -- a timeless rolickingly pulpy rock & soul set with a great group of Detroit musicians -- our favorite set from the legendary Mr Williams in years! There's a forthright sincerity to the songs that's wonderful, and that growly quality in Andre's has never been better served in the past decade than it is here. There's conversational quality to his singing that's remarkably affective, too. Serious without sacrificing the somewhat seedy charm of his later years and the band brings the right mix of spare r&b, rock and garage. Includes members of Detroit's Dirtbombs and others, producer and guitar player Matthew Smith, and, holy s**t -- that's Dennis Coffey totally killing it on electric guitar! Titles include "My Time Will Come", "America", "Just Call Me", "Tricks", "When Love Shoots You In The Foot", "Tricks", "Cigarettes And My Old Lady", "Too Light To Fight" and more.

This is pretty amazing. Covers of songs everyone knows all too well, but almost unrecognizable in Lavette's hands.

Tracklist:
1. The Word (John Lennon/Paul McCartney)
2. No Time To Live (James Capaldi/Stephen Winwood)
3. Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood (Bennie Benjamin/Gloria Caldwell/Sol Marcus)
4. All My Love (John Baldwin/Robert Plant)
5. Isn’t It A Pity (George Harrison)
6. Wish You Were Here (David Gilmour/Roger Waters)
7. It Don’t Come Easy (Richard Starkey)
8. Maybe I’m Amazed (Paul McCartney)
9. Salt Of The Earth (Michael Jagger/Keith Richards)
10. Nights In White Satin (David Hayward)
11.Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad (Eric Clapton/Bobby Whitlock)
12. Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me (Elton John/Bernard Taupin)

I think so but I don't think I've seen it posted here or anywhere else for that matter. Not that I've looked.

Cool, I was looking forward to that Bettye Lavette.

Got an email from Bloodshot this AM, and the Williams album is featured in it. For interested Chicago Obners, it says there's a release party at Schuba's on 5/29.

I found this pretty disappointing, but for anyone who actually LIKES bluegrass (ie: not me) they could do a lot worse.

Durango is the new album by ex-Long Ryder Sid Griffin's Coal Porters. Recorded in Colorado by the legendary Ed Stasium (Phil Spector, Ramones, Smithereens, Mick Jagger) in two weeks of frenzied musical activity it is, says Griffin happily, ''the best work I have ever done''. Containing five new Griffin compositions and a bluegrass cover of Neil Young's Like A Hurricane.

That they're from Australia makes me like them less, almost immediately.

you know, "the gathering gloom" would be a pretty cool band name - wonder if anyone's ever used it...
