Finally got around to giving that Tame Impala a couple of spins...more like Lame Impala.

Seriously though, it's ok but two things jumped out at me immediately: 1. The drums are mixed annoyingly high. Like I know they were shooting for a Revolver meets Elephant 6 sound palette but they pushed the drums too far over the top. At least they sound good. 2. There's some painfully derivative stuff on it that really doesn't mix with the stronger parts. Like, don't try and sell me that there's anything new or exciting here. It is what it is.

To each his own though and I'm definitely going to play it more.

see, and that's kind of what i dig about this record. shit is over-driven, a bit too loud, and slightly obnoxious. nothing is "perfect". some of it strangely reminds me of early Nirvana.

definitely nothing new to offer whatsoever, but these songs, and album as a whole, play really fucking well together.

No, but I ordered it yesterday. Getting some very strong reviews. She's one of those that I don't feel like I'm gambling when i buy her stuff unheard.

On a related note, anybody run across this?

i find it interesting that the 2 best albums of 2010 so far are total throwbacks to indie rock and psych rock.

simple songs, catchy, sound amazing stoned, etc..

I couldn't get Hipinion to give me a login again after it went down. If you see the new Tesla Boy, could you please share the link? I found their EP care of Hip.

Pitchfork:

UPDATE: According to the Mad Decent Twitter, 200,000 people tried to download the mixtape at once, which crashed the Mad Decent site. So they've offered an alternate means to download the tape: This Zshare link.

Lazerproof, the new collaborative mixtape from Major Lazer and La Roux, is now out in the world. Diplo's Mad Decent label posted the link this morning, and now all you have to do is click on over to this website and cough up an email address and a zip code.

According to Mad Decent, the tape includes "a bunch of JA-inspired blends, special remixes, dubplates and more." Guests include Gucci Mane, Drake, Gyptian, Rusko, and Amanda Blank.

I have not heard it yet, but I get this. The ep I kinda liked, but some of this whatever sound is lacking soul or something. I'm hoping there'll be something more in the album.

The Alps - Le Voyage

Mikey IQ Jones at Other Music Wrote:
A stunning tour de force of rustic Americana, dirty French psychedelics, and German Kraut buzz, instrumental trio the Alps manage to take the listener on an aural adventure, laidback yet expansive, living up to every facet of its ambitious title. On Le Voyage, they spin ten near-perfect soundscapes out of musical threads that span multiple decades, nations, and genres, yet distill them all into a moment of beauty as melancholic, sexy, and hypnotic as an epic sunset. Orchestral grandeur rubs up against pulsating rhythm beds, musique concrete sound collage mingles with psychedelic drone, and the entire record breathes with a cinematic air and a throbbing low-end that recalls the sensuality of Gainsbourg and Vannier, the creepy dread of Goblin, and the hazy pastoralist dreams of Popol Vuh. I've been absolutely floored by this album since my first listen; I discover new details with each spin, and it's one of those records that, whenever it plays here in the store, commands the attention of anyone shopping and forces them all to inquire about its origins. How much more hyperbolic praise do I need to dish out? I'll stop here; the music simply speaks for itself, and I won't hesitate in saying that this is not only one of the year's best, most beautiful albums, but is also a high watermark in the Type Records catalogue -- and looking at the intense winning streak they've been riding, that's really saying something. Absolutely highest recommendation!!

Enjoying these cats. Reverby, noisy, weirdo slow jams.

Gauntlet Hair - "I Was Thinking" 7" - 2010

“Particularly heart-melting is Gauntlet Hair’s “I Was Thinking,” which is five minutes of cascading guitar bliss and shivery echoing vocals that sound like the wind blowing through your hair down the open road. Someone needs to put it on a movie soundtrack immediately.”—THE FADER

snagged that gauntlet hair track from pfork whenever and immediately added it to mix - great quality rip. while i like it, i've driven it into the ground w overplays and now tend to skip over it. still, i'm curious to see what else they can do even though the other songs on myspace were fairly weak. thanks for the link

Anyone having trouble with the Lazerproof link? I have downloaded it twice and I get errors/empty zips both times.
