Excited that I finally got to see a Miyazaki film in a theater. Good movie that doesn't quite reach the heights of my favorites by him (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Whisper of the Heart), but isn't near the bottom, either. Very beautiful visually... definitely a good one to catch in the theater.

i think i went into ponyo with ridiculous expectations (read: to be as good as howl's) and was kinda disappointed. it had its moments, but i wasn't even thinking of it two minutes out of the theater.

worth the price of admission then? I want to see it and have about a 2 day window since VA sucks at getting good movies and keeping them around.

Keep in mind that it doesn't appear to be as deep as his other works and is geared toward a kiddier audience (although you'll see some things you wouldn't see in a US-produced kid's animation) to temper expectations and, yes, I'd recommend it. Beautiful animation, some fun characters, If one is going to see it at all, I definitely think that the big screen is the best way to see it.

note to self: remember, it was called Chappelle's Show, not Neal Brennan's show, for a reason.

yeah this was fucking great. I might watch this again right now.

Hmmm. Watched it last night and can't say I'm on board with you guys comments.

Very British and very well written but I just didn't really find it all that funny or scathing. As some sort of mockumentary I thought it never really supplied the laughs any more than some Chris Guest vehicle. Felt like some sort of British West Wing with profanity and pop culture references ("There are only 2 people in the White Stripes").

Then again, this may be one that gets better on repeated viewings like other British comedies (see: Withnail and I). I know FemDerris and I were talking about some of the lines this morning and I found it funnier in retrospect. For instance, Simon asking about what sort of "meat in the room" was he, "tit meat?". Also, the interchanges between the US aides were pretty good, "smells like bisque".

I wouldn't call it a mockumentary. I guess West Wing meet Arrested Development would be a good comparison.

I think I feel the same way about Withnail and I as you do about In the Loop. Didn't find it all that funny while watching it, but would laugh at certain jokes days later.

It's the world's longest set-up to a punchline. 105 minutes to get to that last line, from Minka Kelly.

Overall, the movie is great... But not because, even in dumping the lead's sorry ass, Zooey Deschanel remains some ideal for eligible females. Rather, she puts the lie to the division between the "Popsicle Girl" & "Alderman's Daughter" archetypes, while making plain the latter, in reality, is the only true ugly beastliness of the two.

& you can just say it's me being bitter that it took me ten plus years to figure this out, & maybe that's a part of this, but it doesn't make the conclusion less apt.

To summarise: fuck the self-loathing natives of the Stal, two-faced sceneastas all. Fuck 'em.

two nights ago I saw:

Inglourious Basterds

Which I thought was really good. Makes the good balance between being a character driven film and outrageous violence.

Defiance.

Pretty awesome story. The movie was a tad long, but I enjoyed it overall.

Me, too. I can't muster up a desire to see it, despite liking nearly all of the elements involved.

Well, since I liked it I'm about 90% sure that 90% of this board will hate it.

Not recommended.

Did you know that in high school, the attractive athletic popular kids can be self-absorbed and cruel? And that kids from broken homes in small midwestern towns are all artists waiting to be set free in the big city?

HEY!
Somebody needs to fill the void left by John Hughes' death.

This did not fill that void. It wasn't badly done, but there was nothing unpredictable or especially ingratiating about it. I didn't really care about any of the characters, and exactly what you thought would happen is what happened, every time. (shrug)
