News on Archives Volume 2 from the Neil Young Times

Quote:
ARCHIVES TEAM WORKS HARD ON VOLUME 2
July 23, 2010
The NYA team, headed by Will Mitchell and Hannah Johnson, is digging through material supplied by numerous sources, including newspapers, writers, fans, bootleg audio collectors and photographers (special thanks to photographer/collector Joel Bernstein). Much work has been done and there is much left to do. Using the template designed by the late Larry Johnson, the whole team is pushing forward.

Special thanks to audio engineers John Nowland, Tim Mulligan and the team at Redwood Digital for the unbelievable amount of work that has been accomplished so far. Volume 2 promises even more content than Volume 1, with many unreleased tracks.

Four unreleased albums from this period are being rebuilt and will be available in the NYA Special Release Series. Chrome Dreams, Homegrown and Oceanside-Countryside are the three unreleased studio albums. Also from this period is the unreleased Odeon-Budokan live recording produced by David Briggs and Tim Mulligan. These albums initially will be released in vinyl from analog masters as they originally were created for that format. So now is the time to get your new phonograph player. The new players, built with today's technology, are exceptionally good.

A Treasure to be the next in Neil's Archive series

http://neilyoungnews.thrasherswheat.org ... oming.html

Quote:
The album features a total of five never-before-released songs which Young performed with his backing band, The International Harvesters. The outfit included slide guitarist Ben Keith (R.I.P.), bassists Tim Drummond and Joe Allen, fiddle player Rufus Thibodeaux, drummer Karl Himmel, and piano players Spooner Oldham and Hargus “Pig” Robbins. One of those five cuts, a song entitled “Grey Riders”, will be serviced to radio in the near future. In a statement regarding the LP, Young explained the effort’s name, saying, “I hadn’t heard these takes in 25 years, but when we unearthed them co-producer Ben Keith said, ‘This is a treasure.’”

I probably should know better than to ask, but whatever happened to these?

saw one of the last shows of the twisted road le noise tour at massey hall last week, after seeing the very first of it in albany about a year ago. went with all fam and friends and had great seats to see him, in mecca. amazing that after a whole year, he's playing an identical setlist, with one exception: my my hey hey reprise to close was excepted. but that's not at all the point. he's playing extremely languid versions of these songs on a nightly basis, a mix of the hits and the new songs. so, in fact, there is no real repetition. except for all his affectations onstage. anyone who's seen him multiple times in recent tours/years will notice that the way he wanders from instrument to instrument, ponders playing it between songs, has a little conversation with his indian statue at the back, it's all scripted (from a performance perspective, non-song). this show was being filmed by jonathan demme for the third in the trilogy of films he's done since "prairie wind". as such, there were explicit postings within the hall requesting fans to refrain from hooting. i can't even describe how disgusted and perplexed i am by the behaviour of some of neil's fans. shouting NEEEEEIIIIILLLLLLLLL in the quietest parts of songs, as if they're at a hockey game. really deplorable and ruinous conduct, such that my dad and i reasoned that we're going to think twice about seeing neil again, even if it's at massey hall, the best place on earth to see him, despite the amazing, singular renditions of ohio and cortez, for example, and how much i appreciate the new songs. a $150 ticket to sit near retards who clap off time...

You can't get away from the retards, no matter where you are. It's what keeps me out of movie theatres, concerts, and general public gatherings unless it's absolutely necessary.

neglected to mention that i attended the premiere of "neil young journeys" by jonathan demme at the toronto film fest a few weeks ago, with neil and jonathan in attendance. this third neil film by demme documents a pair of massey hall shows from the spring, one of which i attended, at the close of the le noise tour. i had also seen the very first show of the tour in albany, and the debuts of many album songs. the film was a lot like "trunk show", the second in the trilogy. very intimate capture of gritty performances. they presented the audio in 96 khz, and it sounded incredible (way better than the actual live show, which was marred by a few terrible hollerers in the typical toronto audience). q & a following the screening involved a very jocose neil fielding memories from old grade school classmates, and such.

Well it's not really an album, but a 37 minute jam. However, it doesn't matter. This I could listen to all day.

Quote:
Neil Young and Crazy Horse fans, prepare to have your minds blown. This morning, a new video appeared on Young's website of a thirty-seven minute Neil Young and Crazy Horse jam session. Unfortunately, the video merely shows tape rolling back in a studio from many different angles – but many Neil-ologists on the internet have concluded that it's newly recorded. The group plays tiny bits of "Fuckin' Up" and a few other songs in the midst of a crazily long jam, before transitioning into an epic version of "Cortez The Killer" after about nineteen minutes.

Sharp-eyed fans will notice lyrics to a handful of previously unknown songs scattered around the studio, as well as a rubber chicken and an alligator head. The titles of the songs appear to read "Oh Susanna," "Love + Wall," "Ontario," "This Land Is Your Land," "Gallows Tree," "Oh My Darling" and "Clementine." This could certainly be an old recording, but judging by the sound of Young's singing voice, it seems to be new. We can't embed the video here, so check it out on Young's official website.

As we previously reported, Young recently announced at the Slamdance Film Festival that he is recording new material with Crazy Horse. When asked to describe the sound of the music on his Facebook page, Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina wrote: "It's different, but Neil Young and Crazy Horse style!" If this jam is any indication, he's definitely right about that latter part. They sound absolutely amazing. Let's all hope they announce some tour dates soon.

Nice. Yeah, I didn't listen to much of the stream. I guess the people on twitter that originally posted the link exclaiming it was the new record were a little presumptuous. Still, its very cool.
