Whoever put up that Bill Fay earlier (hope I got that name right and am too lazy to check), that was outstanding stuff and I am now on a quest to track down more of his stuff.

Thought about it, but figured no guru would be the only one who DL's it. And he'd probably know most of the songs.

lame reasoning. ;-) .

I've gotten all the way to 10 pm on Kate Bush's 50th birthday without posting a tenner called There Goes A Kate Bush Tenner

Actually, I would enjoy a 77's mix, as I have only heard one EP from them.

Cool....I might.....I had already started an XTC mix and Over the Rhine mix so I was aiming to finish those first, eventually...

I'd really be interested in hearing both of these.

I actually have a really fucking good XTC mix that Albion sent me years ago, thought it's longer than 10.

That Mouse On Mars is stellar. I almost agree with you on them being the best electronic act of the past decade. I probably would have picked a couple of different tracks, but the one's you chose definitely gave a great overview of the various styles they've approached over the years.

Pretty much the same thought's on the Molina, though I would have loved to see something from Amalgamated Sons of Rest (as Oldham and Molina on the same record was an absolute dream come true), but again, great snapshot of the various approaches he has taken over the years. I've never understand why this guy isn't huge, or why some of his solo efforts got mediocre reviews, but then again I don't listen to a lot of stuff like this so maybe there's something I don't hear.

Thanks, man!

Yeah, when I make these I tend try and give the broadest overview possible while still keeping the quality level up. I could probably have served MoM better by leaving off stuff from the last two albums in favor of something from Glam and maybe even "Maus Mobile" or a track from their debut. I just never like Vulvaland that much, and while I love Glam, I feel like those tracks are too subdued for a mix.

With Molina, I honestly don't think his songs on Amalgamated Sons of Rest are very good. I think Oldham totally showed him up, there. I feel pretty good about that mix, and there's not much I would change except maybe throwing in "The Gray Tower" instead of the track from Impala or the one from Hecla and Griper.

OK, I feel guilty now. I need to listen to some more tenners. I've had Betty Davis queued up for a while, and there are several more I need to grab.

Nice. I'll be interested to see what you put on there. I was thinking about attempting them, too, and my mix would have been heavily slanted towards their early stuff.

It's fucking hard. My initial approach was to make it easier on myself and just take one song from each of their first 10 proper full lengths (White Music thru Nonsuch), while avoiding the obvious bigger singles (Nigel, Dear God, Generals, etc.) But then I'd also be eschewing Apple Venus, Rag & Bone Buffet, etc. So, I don't know yet. If somebody else gets to it before me, more power to 'em.

Listening to the Marcos Valle tenner right now and, needless to say, I am digging it. It does remind me of similar-period Caetano Veloso, so I can see why you are into this guy, Billy.

The early 70's stuff is kind of like The Association travels to Brazil; very cool vocal arrangements... although maybe they aren't as much the focus of the songs as they are with The Association.

Thanks.

I'm fully expecting you to hate it so I'm going to have a hard time mustering up any anger over your (likely) derisive comments.

It'll probably hurt you more than it will me.

Drinky, I was honestly hoping for the opportunity to drop the 'unlistenable' bomb today and then say something further derisive, or perhaps more accurately, predictable. However, the Faust mix was just tremendous and is probably up there with my favourite mixes thus far. I got a little worried when I hit 'Meadow Meal', but by the 3 min mark things picked up (guitar!) and it was great. While I think you said it was like early Zappa and Pink Floyd (both of which I kind of like), I was also reminded at times of The Velvet Underground and Stooges (both of which I love). My two favourites were probably 'It's a Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl' and 'No Harm', but of which had me pausing a few times.

I anticipate playing this at least a few more times until I can track down their early 70s albums. Awesome job on this mix.

Awesome! Really glad you liked it.

You'd probably want to start with the Faust/So Far two-fer. Then Faust IV (I think there's a deluxe version now with BBC sessions or something) and eventually Tapes (it's mostly just screwing around - the songs I picked are some of the only actual songs on it).

bootsy collins - music (and the bass espeically, obviously) is top notch and is just about up there with p-funk for me. love it. however, i am quickly reminded why i never explored bootsy more years ago. i simply can't get over his vocals. reminds me of that dude from digital underground. there are only a couple tracks here that feature his vocals predominantly, so i still really do enjoy this tenner.

faust - checked this one out last night. at one point, i owned IV, and i recognized "it's a bit of a pain" from your tracklist. turns out i remembered it because it was the only song i liked and i eventually sold that album! this is just a little too far out there for me i guess? thanks for posting it though...i was happy to hear that song again!

Thanks, I'm on the search now.

Also, billyg's Devo mix is really fun. Outside of 'Whip It' and 'Satisfaction' (which is totally perfect in Casino), I was completely ignorant of their music. Until I hit 'Jocko Homo' and realized Weird Al covered it for one of his polka songs on In 3-D. Interestingly, while listening to 'The Day My Baby Gave Me A Surprise', I thought "I wonder if the Strokes listened to a lot of Devo?" because I hear a lot of them in here. Great mix again, billy.

Gracias for the Molina. He's one of those guys that I have one or two albums by, and everytime I listen to one, I think to myself, "why do i not own everything this guy has done?"

Yeah, he's somebody I think a lot more Obners would like, especially the big Neil Young fans.

Just the opposite for me Drinky. I wrote Molina off after seeing Magnolia Electric Co. in Nashville a few years back. His Crazy Horse worship was a turn-off. I'd rather listen to the real thing.

He really isn't that much like Neil Young, though. He just went through a pretty brief period (2002-2004) of making stuff that seemed like a direct homage to On the Beach and Tonight's the Night. His band really isn't that much like Crazy Horse, and his older Songs: Ohia stuff is closer to Will Oldham than Neil Young.

Yeah, I did. I shared some thoughts in this thread, I think, and toots reviewed it over in his thread in the Review Forum.

edit: Basically, I liked it. Some pretty funny stuff, and some pretty good songs.

I listened to it earlier and liked it, although qualitatively it seems like something I'd prefer to listen to later at night, kind of like billy's Mark Lanegan mix. I'd agree that while I hear a Neil influence, he's not openly imitating him. Green On Red sound way more like Crazy Horse.

I'll download a heck of a lot more of these as soon as I get a break from an insane work week and as soon as I figure out why rar files have stopped opening on my Mac.

the only ones - well now i have a new favorite tenner. which has actually now turned into more like an eighteener because i followed the suggestion of tracking down those peel sessions. good shit though...like a poppier version of the buzzcocks maybe? his vocals remind me of someone, and i can't put my finger on it. anyways, really digging this one...thanks!

edit: has someone covered "the whole of the law"? i've heard this before....

edit edit: allmusic is your friend. yo la tengo covered this song.

Anyway, back to music talk. I had no idea that toots was in Brazil, so I put that on and I really liked it, quite a lot actually. It paired well with data analysis. So I'll check out toots' own tenner from his band and then check out a whole album.

if you decide to commit to a whole album, may i suggest The Philosophy of Velocity as an entry point, given what i know about your sensibilities.

PoV has a lot more of a raw vibe - we pushed all the levels into the red a bit for sort of a dust-on-the-stylus sound - and it marks the rather forced end of our Mars Volta Jr. tag

A Hostage... is a good record, imo, but listening to it is kind of like looking at my senior pictures.
