Not going to go into the semantics of the wording, but I will say that perhaps its becoming a buzzword because there is/was already a perceived notion of who a Christian is, and therefore this gives credence to those beliefs. And let's face it--the person who associates these acts with Christianity (or Islam for that matter), probably looking for a headline, or just isn't very well informed.
