I'm a little embarassed to say the last movie I watched was Julie and Julia with my mom and dad. Of course my mom loved it.... The movie was sappy and lame but Meryl Streep was amazing and I've got a thing for Amy Adams, so it wasn't all bad.

I saw this a few days ago and loved it. It was tough to sit through at times, though.

Alternative education saves the day by saving a life or two. This is my life.

The mother, Mo'Nique, was best acting performance of the year... loud, chewing the scenery, broad... but intensely real. She was amazing.

This week saw Up in the Air.... first two thirds masterful... Clooney seals it as the Cary Grant of his generation. Last third a little weak and unfocused, but the interviews with the "laid off" were moving.

The Road... read the book which, although a slight read, had a nice fable simplicity. The movie was a little silly... I hated the kid, wanted to slap him most of the time, which pretty much ruined it for me. And the art direction was mediocre in what was a huge opportunity to create a nightmare world.

Going to see 9 tonight.. 8 1/2 is one of my favorite movies, and previews look like Bas Luhrmann musical, so it is with some trepidation.

Over the past week:

The Lives of Others. Great, great movie. Will have to revise my list of favorite movies of the 00s after having seen this.

Rachel Getting Married. Decent. Some really good acting, and the musical component was interesting. Like WTF was Robyn Hitchcock doing playing these people's wedding?

Avatar 3D. First time getting out to the theater since the baby was born, and I'm really glad it was to see this. I know a lot of people here thought this looked terrible from the previews, and I have to admit that I did, too. After hearing so much overwhelming praise, though, especially for the 3D version, I decided I had to see it. I suppose it's essentially the Hollywood cartoon version of District 9 (only with a basic plot and story arc that feels far more predictable), but it was immensely entertaining. On the level of pure spectacle, I really feel like it's unsurpassed.

Nice. Thought you'd have seen it.

If I were to make a list, this would be on it.

Over the last two days, I've seen both Up in the Air and The Fantastic Mr. Fox. I dig stop motion/voice acting Clooney over the former.

Yep, that was a great film. Which somehow makes me think that I never got around to making a best of the decade list but if I did I would put 4 Months, 3 weeks, and 2 Days at the top of the list. That film just has stayed with me a long time.

"Papa ... Papa ... Papa ... Papa" STFU!!

This was a hide the razors movie. So bleak and boring.

Seeing "Avatar" Imax 3D tomorrow. I hear the first hour is amazing and the next 2 kind of lags. Hoping for the best.

I wouldn't say it "lags", but the novelty of the 3D does wear off after about the first 40 minutes or so. The movie also becomes increasingly predictable as it goes, too. Every major event has some pretty obvious foreshadowing.

inglorious basterds was a good movie that normally, given its length, would have put me to sleep.
extract was a good delivery of a middle life crisis.
and as a chick flick, whatever works was interesting enough to keep me engaged throughout.

Saw this with my family and one of my uncles. The acting and direction were top notch, but was a bit bored by the rugby bits. The Whole thing was more interesting because my uncle is an Afrikaner who was living in South Africa at the time, and knows some of the current rugby players on the team.

Watched this last night and was surprised by how good it was. Reminded me of a David Lynch film, but less weird. The ending was perfect.

We tried to go see Invictus Christmas night late, but one of the reels was screwed up. Probably just wait for DVD.

Finally got around to seeing Point Blank and Roman Holiday last week both of which were pretty good. Never realized that Payback was a remake of Point Blank. I knew it was a remake but had assumed it was a remake of Get Carter (probably just because of the name Carter) which I'd also never seen.

Going to see this:

in a few hours.

Probably Donnie Yen's best work other than Iron Monkey. RIYL if you liked Jet Li's Fearless.

Normally it's probably the thing I despise most about Obner and the Obnish (unnecessary bumping--just start a new thread!) but I think I missed this one the first time around so it was worth it.

shouldn't you be outraged or something here?
