Also I find that really interesting about how Dylan sounds now, and its effect on the people who would leave early.

Well, you have to imagine that a lot of these people hadn't seen Dylan in decades. They probably aren't familiar with his new stuff, and probably aren't aware of where his voice is. If I remember correctly, there was a weird backlash around the time that Time Out of Mind. Critics and most music fans loved it, but there were those who just spit it out after ingesting.

At this point though, Dylan has been touring constantly and playing mash up with his material for more than 20 years. If you still think he sounds like he did at the Gaslight in '62, that's a you problem, not a Dylan problem. Get out more, ya fucking dolts.

Yeah, I think it's not an issue of Dylan sounding different than he did in '62, but more to do with the fact that he's fucking horrible.

So, I went to see them in Tuscaloosa last night. I can count on 1 finger the shows I've been to sober, and seeing the Truckers sobers seems sorta antithetical.

But it was cool. The crowd was YOUNG, and they knew every damned song - moreso than any TTOwn crowd would have 4-5 years ago.

The opening band was FUCKING AMAZING. Like Aretha + Janis + Macy Gray x Nirvana awesome: http://www.twentyfourbit.com/post/99586 ... hang-loose

but man, Patterson and THE STROKER ACE MIKE COOLEY are a different breed. Literally like Billy Faulkner and Eudora Welty if they banged junk like Bill Burroughs.

Not sure I've ever noticed as much how Hood and Cooley trade songs. They ended with Let There Be Rock and Get On The Plane. What else do you need?

But Dancin Rickey can still kiss my ass

Pretty cool that at basically the same time you were texting me about the Shakes, Isbell was retweeting a photo somebody sent him:

This Jacksonville, AL band is managed by the DBT's manager. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of them. They play Nashville next week during Soundland

Daaaaaang. Well, NYE is now decided.

DBT will be doing 3(!!!) nights in DC. Cannot tell you how excited I am at not having to travel very far for NYE.

Dec. 29th w/ Lucero
Dec. 30th w/ J Roddy & The Business
Dec. 31th w/ Booker T & Alabama Shakes.

Femrabbit and I are pretty giddy.

I've seen Alabama Shakes 2x in the last two weeks. They've got some work to do. They can be good if they practice more. The front-woman definitely has that "it" quality and some soul.

Well, I was gonna go see DBT tonight but they've decided to not start the set until after the goddamn baseball game. I was gonna take my buddy from out of town with me but his flight leaves early tomorrow. Fuckin' hell.

I dunno, man. The ramshackle jangle of their sound is what I really like.

If they get "good" they might end up like Betty LeVette or something.

Athens 2012 is on. Too bad we are in the process of many different things--otherwise we'd probably be packing our bags.

Patterson Hood Wrote:
Y'ALL:
It gives me great pleasure to once again announce our Athens GA / 40 Watt / Nuci's Space HOMECOMING WEEKEND EVENT.
This year, in the hope of raising more money than ever for Nuci's Space and the great work that they do, we have restructured it so that they take a share of all three nights.
The Fabulous 40 Watt Club provided our band with a home to come home to years ago when we were a struggling band, hooking us up with a much bigger venue than we were playing elsewhere at the time, with excellent production and their world famous hospitality.
Now, we tend to play in bigger rooms across America and our 40 Watt shows provide our fans with a chance to see us play extended shows up close and personal.
It truly is a special event to us all and something we look forward to all year long.

As 2012 looms, we are planning on touring less next year so our Homecoming should be more special than ever.

As for support, this should be an extra special HOMECOMING WEEKEND on that level also.

Thursday Night, January 12th, we will kick things off in style with Special Guest FUTUREBIRDS.

They played a bunch of shows with us earlier in the year and have recently been out supporting Widespread Panic and Sold Out their show at The Georgia Theatre.

On Friday Night, January 13th, we will be celebrating the luckiest of all nights with our friends ALABAMA SHAKES.

If you don't believe me when I say they're one of the best new bands in the world, check out their video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HxNtWEIKhQ and prepare to be amazed. This will be their Athens GA Premiere and in another year, they will be selling out everywhere. John Pareles from New York Times absolutely raved about their show during CMJ http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/ ... me-to-life

Finally, on Saturday Night, we will bring things home with some special friends.
FREE MOUNTAIN is made up of members (past and present) of several of Athens best bands of all times. (Hayride, Supagroup, Dictatortots and Slackdaddy to name a few) a great new band with great songs and a fantastic show. Kicking the night off for the third year in a row, we will have THE CAMP AMPED BAND, comprised of some of the finest young talent in our fair town.

We will also have our annual auction at Nuci's Space and other such events to announce later (so stay tuned).

Tickets go on sale November 3, at 12pm EST.

All three nights sell out every year and I suspect this year they will go quicker than ever so don't put it off.

See You at The Homecoming Rock Show,

I'll be on an airplane when those go on sale, but I propose to Stu, Derris and Loogs that we reprise our trip from last summer--that shit was fun.

Only if Derris promises a reprise of mid-concert behavior, I can guarantee I don't lose my bag, and we go both nights.

From Captain's Dead -

Pre-Trucker record from Hood/Cooley.

After 21 years of nothing, i figured, in my little brain that it may be alright to post this adams house cat record, town burned down. also me thinks that it if it would have seen the light of day, it would have by now considering the trucker’s popularity. for those unfamiliar with the whole ordeal this is patterson and cooley’s band before forming the drive by truckers. it was recorded in muscle shoals back in 1990. oh, and are we ever gonna hear a mike cooley solo record? i could have sworn that i read that one was recorded a couple of years ago. so whats up? this needs to happen….

Just sharing, haven't heard it.

Damn, I'll wonder who they'll have fill in. Can't say I'll miss her.

I do have to wonder if she was fired, though. Hope this isn't the beginning of the end of the road for the band, although they have been hinting that they may not be able to keep going on for too much longer.

I know that they aren't really going to be touring much next year. Maybe she can't afford to not be working? I've always thought she's got a tough job touring with a bunch of dudes anyway; i'm sure that shit gets old.

She's a pretty damn good bass player but I think it was ill advised to start putting her songs on DBT albums.

So I got to go see Shonna's last show as a Trucker it seems. (Philly a few weeks ago) Well that adds something to that show experience I guess. They did only play one of her songs...It was "Dancin' Ricky."

Just read this.

Pretty crazy. I agree with Bloor, it must've been tough touring with a bunch of guys on a daily basis. Also, criticism for her musicianship was no doubt heard (can't see how she didn't hear some of it). Which, is really a pity because her playing, songwriting, and singing really have really improved and made for some interesting compositions on the records. She was a voice in a crowd that is already dominated by men. Maybe we'll see her pop up with a solo record, or form her own group. Who knows.

I figure Barbe will become fulltime bass once its all said and done.

Shonna's statement:

Quote:
Hello friends,

Unfortunately, I come to you all with some sad news.

It's time for me to move on to the next great thing, whatever that may be.

I want to thank each and everyone of you, with my whole heart for your overwhelming kindness and support over the years. You are the greatest fans in the world! You really do amaze and inspire me. I can't express how much you all mean to me. Your rock solid encouragement has carried me through, many nights. I have been so lucky to have had the chance to meet and talk with so many of you. Your stories and passion are so incredibly inspirational to me.

I am, without a doubt, not done. I will have a website up and running very soon so that we can keep in touch. I have a whole lot left to say and do, and I can't wait to hear what all of you are up to. This is very difficult, so I'll leave you with this... for now...

Thank you all so much!

Safe travels and Happy Holidays to you all!

See you soon somewhere...

All my love,
Shonna
