Avatar and Blind Side siphoned the facile vote and Hurt Locker was left standing?

I didn't see any of these movies, btw - just a reader of the zeitgeist.

This doesn't wash with the preference voting the Academy instituted for this year's Best Picture nominees. I doubt Avatar got as many tens as Hurt Locker, sure, but no way was Blind Side in most people's top five, let alone getting even a few tens. I expect Avatar was hurt by being a polarizing film, a fair number of 8s, 9s, & 10s, but cancelled out by 1s, 2s, 3s, & 4s.

Anyway, I thought Inglourious Basterds should have won, so what do I know?

You can tell Blind Side was in the running, because Sandy Bullock got the Best Actress nod.

You know, call me crazy, but I have no desire whatsoever to see "The Blind Side." For those of you who have seen it, tell me-- is it worthwhile? Because my perception is it's another movie targeted towards white people, to make them feel less guilty ("see? Sandra Bullock is a GOOD white woman who helps out the black man!"). Is that an unfair assumption?

edit: i.e. this sounds like a movie my parents would LOVE.

Then why did Jeff Bridges win, over Clooney? Crazy Heart not up for Best Picture; Up in the Air was.

& in Best Supporting Actress, Mo'Nique ran away with it, while I doubt Precious was given much consideration for Picture.

The Dude won on the lifetime achievement ticket, while until he breaks out into something truly left field, Clooney will always suffer for playing George Clooney over whatever his character is supposed to be.

Mo'Nique won on shock value - even the liberal Jewish Academy Establishment is amazed that a fat black woman can act.

I haven't seen Precious but supposedly Monique is fucking awesome in it; though I'm not sure how much of it was acting if you know what I mean--Personally I'm glad she won just because I pretty much hate the archetypical female lead that usually wins.

I have a feeling that after I see a couple more of these movies, I'm going to have to come back and agree with Monty that [i]Inglorious Basterds[i/] should have won--I quite enjoyed it.

Yeah, I haven't seen a single one of these, and doubt I will see more than 3 or 4: Inglourious, Hurt Locker and Crazy Heart are ones that I WANT to see, and I am sure I will be forced to rent The Blind Side, for all the reasons D said earlier.

I think Inglourious Basterds should have won, myself. By far my favorite movie from last year.

Watching "You're Gonna Miss Me" about Roky Erickson, which reminded me, he actually stayed at the same hotel as me for Bumbershoot 2007.

I thought it was good. What you'd expect from a Reitman film at this point.

I watched this last night too. It was all right, but I was a little surprised at all the accolades it received.

I was too. It was like the Academy was searching for something to put up against Avatar that they could build any campaign with this year.

I enjoyed The Hurt Locker...Nothing special and the ending was pretty weak but there was nice intensity throughout and hey, who doesn't like a good war movie? . I also really appreciated that they didn't mine the black/white thing for the conflict between the two main guys--so tired a cliche and kudos to Bigelow for avoiding it.

I felt the same, the opening scene really set the tone; I enjoyed the intensity but found myself wanting resolution in the latter third. Also, agree about the absence of a racial flare-up.

really about the ending? i don't think i've looked the same at a cereal aisle or a jack-in-the-box since seeing the movie.

Alice in Wonderland—By far the worst movie I’ve seen in the theater since the shitfest that was The Island of Dr. Moreau. Completely uninspired and so boring that I fell asleep during the final action sequence. This is, of course, just my opinion, but I haven’t hated a movie in this way for quite a while.

I finally watched Gomorrah yesterday after having it at home for about a month. It was good but I think it's been hyped a little bit too much. It dragged a bit near the middle but finished off well.

Law Abiding Citizen was kind of ludicrous but fun nonetheless. I wish it'd been that he was doing it supernaturally instead of him just being the MacGyver of killing. The ending was a little disappointing too.

It was ok. I don't think it lived up to the hype I built up in my head. Still, it was entertaining. I pretty much will watch anything that has Bernal or Luna in it. Both are great actors imo. It has some great satirical moments.

Had I not had a flask of Scotch, Shutter Island would have been horribly boring and predictable. Since I came prepared, I only thought it was amusingly bad.
