Quote:
It would be lazy to dub New York state pair Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter '2009’s Chairlift', but the similarities are there for all to hear. Both groups have a neat line in minimal beats, occasionally psychedelic electro-indie art strangeness, lush beds of synthesizer and enticing female vocals.

But Phantogram’s greater willingness to embrace the experimental and a few different influences mark the newer band out as being an odder but equally exciting proposition. Keyboardist Carter has said Serge Gainsbourg and hip hop inspire the duo’s sound and these can both be heard on this potent debut.

Single Running from the Cops trips along like Portishead and DJ Shadow sparring over dark static and Carter’s bizarre, mistreated mumble, and Let Me Go is a wanton blend of ardour and machinery which sounds like drunken robots walking arm in arm down the Champs-Élysées.

When musicians throw ideas and textures together in an innovative fashion quality will occasionally drop, as it does on Bloody Palms. Indecision over whether to make abstract hip hop or Battles-style avant-pop leaves the song not quite working as either.

Eyelid Movies’ finest moments are when Barthel is allowed to fully utilise her voice. As Far As I Can See, the album’s standout track, is an incredible electro-soul slacker anthem which expertly blends cut-up brassy samples, thudding loops and exquisite, honeyed singing. Final track 10,000 Claps is as good, if completely different, and brilliantly incongruous – maudlin piano and a timbre more at home on a Sparklehorse record combine effectively with Barthel now affecting an alt-folk lilt.

A refreshing, unusual and diverting first record from two new talents, then, and one to recommend for jaded electro and indie fans who felt the New York scene had gone as far as it could with art-skronk.

I've been listening to this all night and really dig it. Thanks man.

I know it's his first album in 8 years, which makes it something of an event if you've ever been a fan. If you haven't, his vocals sound almost like Squeeze's Glen Tilbrook, although he's more folk/Americana oriented than power pop. His lyrics are unusually good, and his apex was probably (imo) Can You Fly? from '92, which is as good as this genre gets. I'll see if I can find a link for that one.

Edit: can't find a link, so I'll up it myself when I have the time.

This doesn't really belong in the 2010 thread, but whatever.

Here's some more info for the curious:
Quote:
Johnston made his recording debut in 1989 with two tracks on a Bar/None label sampler, Time for a Change, and his first album, the scrappy and genially eccentric The Trouble Tree, followed in 1990. While the album received largely positive reviews and became a minor hit in Holland, sales were poor in the United States, and in order to finance recording of his second album, Johnston was forced to sell some farmland which had been with the Johnston family for generations (an decision Johnston set to music in his song "Trying to Tell You I Don't Know"). However, the risk paid off as 1992's Can You Fly earned enthusiastic reviews and was named among the year's best albums by The New York Times, Billboard, Spin, and Musician Magazine; Robert Christgau in The Village Voice went so far as to call it "a perfect album." The album also earned a healthy amount of alternative radio airplay, and Can You Fly's success convinced Elektra Records to sign Johnston. His first set for Elektra, 1994's This Perfect World, received similarly positive press and spawned a minor hit single in the song "Bad Reputation." While Johnston's next three albums for Elektra -- Never Home, Blue Days Black Nights, and Right Between the Promises -- didn't fare as well in terms of sales, he maintains a loyal fan following and the respect of critics and peers. He released The Way I Were: 4-Track Demos 1986-1992 in 2004, followed by Live at McCabe's Guitar Shop in 2006. Johnston has also dabbled in film scoring by writing incidental music for the Farrelly Brothers comedy Kingpin, and he performs occasionally with the Know-It-All Boyfriends, an informal cover band featuring Butch Vig and Doug Erikson of Garbage.

It may not belong, but it's the Freedy album to dl. That new one is pretty tame and dull.

AFCGT - AFCGT

I'm a huge fan of A-frames, and it's a collab with Climax Golden Twins. Out on Sub Pop. I've given it a couple of spins and i wasn't overly impressed but i do remember Harry enjoying that A-frames record (Black Forest), so maybe it could be of interest.

Drooling Hillbilly Metal, Sea Urchin Psychedelia, Yukon Freak Thrash, and Beatnik Swamp Drone are musical genres, like dozens of others, which are in the infancy of their developments. Yet someone has finally harnessed the inside track to claiming a few of these elusive styles as their own creations. AFCGT is a rather convenient vernacular for A Frames and Climax Golden Twins but if you’re hopeful that the usual sources are stocked with facts and figures about this outfit, think again. There’s not much information available on AFCGT. The cretinous calliope that is AFCGT descends from a decrepit longhouse on the shores of a dark lake where the self-inflicted wounds from a windy forest of flailing, whipping branches gave birth to the white heat oddities from this their self-titled new album on Sub Pop Records. Conjoined a little over two years ago, the group has already been dishing out vinyl; recording a 10-inch EP, a full-length LP, and appearing on a 7-inch compilation not to mention a few super-limited CDRs thrown in for kicks. With 3 electric guitars, a bass guitar, and a drum kit they manage to emulate the decaying soundtrack of an international airport with all the trimmings; accidental runway collisions, air traffic control extremism, unauthorized handling of cargo, and bitching passengers at checkpoint screenings. AFCGT will be available as both a vinyl LP (with bonus 7-inch single!) and as a digital album (without bonus 7-inch single!), thoug

That Lissie Why You Runnin' is insanely good. Her voice hits a little too deep that I wanted to shut it off.

Various Artists - Elevator Music (Fabric Compilation) [2010/MP3/224(VBR)]

http://moourl.com/sbsqd

Fabric are set to venture into fresh territory with a new unmixed compilation series.

Entitled Elevator Music, the purpose of each of the releases is to showcase unreleased tracks from some of the producers that have been exciting the Fabric staff, with a definite focus on dance floor. In an interview with FACT, Fabric's A&R synchronisation manager Graham Best has commented that, "for whatever reason I think the last twelve months has seen things go nuts in terms of ideas being exchanged, sounds developing and amazing tracks coming out every other week. It's a really exciting time and as a relatively well known name in dance circles it made sense for Fabric to try and document it."

Although Best has said that future editions won't focus on any particular genre, Volume 1 has a grounding in UK bass music and related international producers, collecting new tracks from the likes of Martyn, Starkey, Shortstuff, Untold and Hot City, as well as an appearance from previous Fabriclive contributors Caspa & Rusko. Ranging from bumping sub-heavy house through to various styles of dubstep, the compilation is sure to appeal to listeners who have been keeping their eyes on recent developments in the UK scene. Although only a CD release is on the cards for the meantime, Best has hinted that there will be a set of vinyl singles that will follow on from the compilation's release in January.

Tracklist
01. Hot City - If That's How I Feel
02. xxxy - Sing With Us
03. Doc Daneeka - Drums In The Deep
04. Hackman - Pistol. In Your Pocket
05. Julio Bashmore - The Moth
06. Untold - Bad Girls
07. Octa Push - Doctor Bayard
08. Shortstuff - Behave
09. Skinnz - Ukraine
10. Mosca - Gold Bricks, I See You
11. Martyn - Friedrichstrasse
12. Vista - Elixir
13. Caspa & Rusko - One Of The Same
14. Om Unit - Encoded
15. Starkey - Black Monolith
16. Shortstuff & Brackles - Melvin Blue (Digital Bonus Track)
