Don't know if I'd put STF ahead of Children of Men, either... But it's close. & your list is invalidated by The Fountain.

Also watched Objectified as well. I've been putting this off for awhile for some reason. Not sure why, but last night I finally sat down and took it in. I guess I expected it to be a film about designers gushing about their achievements and why they're so great--but what I got was more of a humanist, philosophical look at design. A lot poignant quotes including one which said basically that we have all these modern gadgets in our lives, but then go back to our wooden dinner tables to eat dinner. The mismatching of design is incredible in our lives. Also, that today's gadgets are not designed to look like what their function is--in other words, if an alien came to earth and looked at the iphone, would they know it was a phone?
The idea also was breached as to why we are designing things that will be knowingly outdated in a year (or less), and making them out of materials which will last 1000s of years. As one designer said, shouldn't we be making cell phones out of cardboard or something? Intriguing, and highly rec'd.

I really liked Objectified as well.

And as far as recent design films go, have you seen Art & Copy and Helvetica?

Have seen Helvetica (which was cool to see people I've seen and heard lecture speak on film), but haven't seen Art & Copy. I really should, since making commercials is what I do.

the story and "character" of gator was more interesting than the skating, but yeah I'd check that out.

I had a poster of him above my bed that I bought at a school fair. Doing a handplant. Pretty much my archetype of "cool" fashion while it was up.

This was fantastic. Can't believe I slept on it this long. The scenery makes me want to go to Macedonia. Oddly enough, directed by the guy who did the "Tennessee" video for Arrested Development. The idea of intertwining stories has been done before, but it worked here when laying out the effects of war on communities, and how it even transcends borders which aren't at war.

...and this just made me angry because I saw the plot going where it was about 5 minutes into the movie.

Claire Denis has always brought powerful stories to the screen, but I think this one ranks up there as probably one of her best. The acting is superb--with Isabelle Huppert putting in a career-defining performance. She's so subdued, but you can't help but form strong opinions about her motivations. The soundtrack was incredible as well--done by Denis stalwarts, Tindersticks. Wasn't sure how that was going to sound in this setting as a backdrop, but it was an impeccable match.

Quote:
Maria is a White farmer who runs (with her ex-husband, his father, and their son) a failing coffee plantation in an unnamed African country in the present day. Civil war has broken out and rebel soldiers, many of them child soldiers, are advancing on the area. Rebels on the radio advocate attacks on emblems of colonialism. Maria's workers leave, but she refuses to abandon the plantation, and searches for men to finish harvesting of the coffee. As she and her family await the inevitable, the tensions in their personal relationships, and in their relations with the African community, become exposed. Maria puts the farm in even more danger when she looks after a wounded rebel officer known as 'The Boxer'.

Incendies was fantastic! Probably the best movie I've seen this year so far.

Bill Cunningham New York was pretty damn good too.

The Hangover Part II was better than I thought it would be going in based on the reviews I had read. It is what it is, and that's pretty entertaining. It paled in comparison to the other two I saw this weekend, but I enjoyed it and don't regret seeing it in the theater.

This sounds interesting, and yr summation that this is the best film of the year is echoed by a lot of critics. I see its playing in DC. Might have to try to get down there.

I saw In A Better World as well a few weeks ago, which beat out Incendies for the Best Oscar for foreign film. Incendies is much better, in my opinion. Although I enjoyed In A Better World as well.

Good lord. I saw Incendies over the weekend. Jesus. Totally f'ed up.

I can't decide what exactly it's trying to convey; War is hell? Our parents were once people we will never know? Religion is the cause of unthinkable atrocities? Human kind can be impossibly cruel?

All of the above?

Powerful stuff. Makes me want to see In A Better World now.

All that said though, I saw the twist coming WAY too early. Pretty much right after she meets with the Janitor at the school.

My basic reaction as well. As long as a person enjoyed the first one and recognizes that they're not going to mess much with the formula, Hangover II was a fun ride.

True... but didn't take away from the impact of the film overall enough to keep it from being my favorite movie of the year (so far).

Saw these this weekend...

Midnight in Paris... I'm not a huge Woody Allen fan, but I frickin' LOVED this movie. Owen Wilson was perfect for it.

Hobo With a Shotgun... completely f'd up. Enjoyable for what it was, I guess (a midnight movie which for some reason in Milwaukee, started at 11:00 PM... ). Not highly recommended, but had some funny & ridiculous moments going for it.

Same theater will be showing the following "midnight" movies over the next month or so...
Black Death... meh, might see it if I get bored and aren't tired that weekend.
I Saw the Devil... actor from "Oldboy" in it, directed by the same guy that did "The Good, the Bad & the Weird". Intrigues me somewhat.
13 Assassins... I'll be there, for sure!!!

I went in to x-men expecting the absolute worst and was pleasantly surprised. Enough of a plot to keep me from trying to figure out how they were going to piece together and homage all the bits from the comic and the previous three films (i've never cracked open a comic book or graphic novel, as it were, so I don't know a lot of the character history in the original stories).

I enjoyed it.

Bridesmaids made me laugh, a lot. I was pleasantly surprised with that as well.

That fucking movie with John Krasinski and Kate Hudson was infuriatingly bad and stupid and I was forced to go to it. The things we do for play...

For my money, this might be the best of the Grindhouse-style films done in the past however-many-years-since-Grindhouse.
