I should be more nervous about the Cardinals than I am.
Reminds me of the A's-Reds '90 Series when I had little to no concern over facing the Reds.
This is pretty much the highlight of my career as a Cincinnati Sports fan.
You deserve it Tim. They played great in '90.
I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to get a bit long-winded here.
Coming off winning the "Earthquake" Series against the Giants in '89, and winning 103 games in '90, I predicted the A's would only play (8) games in the postseason. Um, unfortunately I was right.
While winning the series the year before was great, they somehow didn't get their "due" cos the series was overshadowed by the earthquake. Every Giants fan I know has made me keenly aware of this fact that it "didn't count" for over twenty years now. (I was at Games 1-2 in Oakland in which they thoroughly dominated the Giants) '90 was a horse of a different color. Even before making my prediction, I was keenly aware that the Reds had gone coast to coast in their division that year. Thsi was done without the help of Eric Davis who was out most of the year with an injury, but would be be back for Game 1 starting in center field. I distinctly remember being asked that afternoon before game 1 about the impact EDavis would make, and I boldly pointed out he would "do nothing in the Series". I believe it was in the first inning he smoked a three-run home run to dead center off Dave Stewart. It was done in typical ED style, where he flipped the bat, didn't look up once and kept spittin' chew. I spent the rest of the first inning pulling my foot out of my mouth. They A's never recovered from the HR blast. Game 2, a bit tighter, 11 innings, a bouncing ball hit by Joe Oliver over the bag wins the game after LaRussa inexplicably moved 3rd baseman Carney Lansford closer to the hole between 3rd & SS. I'm at Game 3 feeling good about a win. Chris Sabo hits his 1st of two HRs, Reds 2-0. Ugh. Harold Baines bridges the gap with a bottom 1st HR to bridge the gap. Ok, no worries. By the end of the 3rd or 4th, can't remember which, the Reds had 11 hits.
Game 4 came around and refused to watch the Reds celebrate on my field, so I gave away my WS tix to a friend. As predicted, the A's played 8 games in the post season.
The A's are heading into the '12 Season without a new ballpark, without any revenue, and knowing quite well, no free agents (even if we could afford'em) want to play in the Mausoleum. Out of all of this, the only redeeming "Baseball" news is effin 'Moneyball'. The book was good, the film, a bit fat 'Meh'
Ugh.
Don't get me started on the '88 Series, the '91 ALCS, the string of deciding Divisional playoffs games they just couldn't get done. They finally won in '06, but were swept by the Tigers in the ALCS. I'm sure that's why I didn't remember the Cards winning in '06. I've blocked it all out.
It's tough being a sports fan. Expectations are the building blocks of resentment.
