The only moments I can think of right now-

Met the guys from Death Cab for Cutie. My friend works for the Craig Kilborn show, and whenever any of us go- he gets us in the Green Room. The guys were chillin in there, and I had my CMJ mag w/them on the cover... they saw it and were totally stoked I had it, so they signed it. Really nice guys.

Marcus from Ambulance Ltd. At the show, they had the promo posters all around, so I made it a mission to snag one... then he was at the bar, asked him to sign it because my birthday was coming up, totally sweet about it and gave him a hug. I wanted to melt. He's so hot.

The lead Donna. (I forget which Donna she is.) She was standing by me at the afterparty for their show, and her friend was stuck outside the VIP area b/c security wouldn't let her in... we ended up chatting for a bit. She's totally cute and a really sweet gal.

Oh yeah- does William Shatner count? (Since he does have an album and all) Same night, at the Donnas/Von Bondies show. He was a jerk. I was laughing because he had his entourage with him and security wouldn't let them in... maybe that's why he was such an asshole to me.

once, after a flaming lips/beck show wayne coyne came up to me and he said, "hey, i know you." this being the first time i ever met him, i replied, "no you don't." he said, "well, then i met your twin." and then we talked about car stereo symphonies and the beauty that is music and composition.

he wrote on the back of a flier i handed him and it said, "hey ian, i'll say hi to yer twin (heart) wayne"

i thought that ruled.

Wayne supplanted Dave Grohl as my favorite rock star last year when he busted in on the interview I was doing w/ The Sun and went Cliff Huxtable on their lead singer. CMJ readers know the story by now since we printed the transcript of what took place. Classic.
But afterward, my friend and I were killing time in the basement of the venue before the show when Wayne comes back and sits down w/ an inflatable robot doll the band uses on stage and a roll of duct tape. Seems the robot had sprung a leak in its base and Wayne was trying to patch him up for the show but couldn't find the leak. There was a sink nearby and my friend told Wayne to fill it up with water, stick the robot in and squeeze so he could see where the bubbles were coming from. We went over and helped him out with it and he was genuinely glad and thankful for our help. I have most of this on MiniDisc and I treasure it.

Such a super guy. And then he went out and played the best concert I saw in 2003.

  • I met Laeticia after a Stereolab show once.
Me: promptly forgot how to speak french.
She: told me she realy liked my shirt.
  • Played a show with Debbie Googe's post-MBV band. Um... said hello to her, that was about it... she was shy & nice.
  • I had the some of the members Tindersticks help me with my keyboard when we opened for them. Very nice & friendly people.
  • Briefly walked into the same room as Jason Spaceman. I was too shy to speak to him. My friends hung out with him & said he was very nice.
  • Over the years I have also mumbled shy 'thank you's to: Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Beck, the drummer from INXS, and the members of Cranes.

Yeah, that kinda threw me, too.
Is another one of our crowd coming out?

I'd say it's hotter than just about anything in the world, actually.

<--------- First celebrity crush was on Chrissie Hynde back in 1982.

Guitarist is Donna R - Alison Richardson, and sadly she's married. They hide her left hand in publicity/cover photos so the boys don't see the hardware and get their feelings hurt.

Drummer is Donna C - Tory Castellenato(sp?) - Last I heard she was dating Tre Cool from Green Day. SPIN published her online personal profile in early '03 (along w/ several others) and she sounded pretty fun. Got my picture taken w/ her after a show in '99 and she was a total sweetheart; even snagged me a free beer from backstage afterward.

Met Donna A - Brett Anderson - before the same show and talked for a bit after they soundchecked. Very nice as well. Seems like they'd still be cool to hang out with even though their tunes have bit the big one for three straight albums.

I only have rock chick crushes on those Donnas and Kazu Makino from Blonde Redhead. A Japanese rocker chick?! Yes, please.

FT's Classic Rock Star Moment:

Back in January, I was standing next to a gate at Chicago Midway Airport waiting to board a work-related flight to Rochester, NY during a pretty healthy snowfall. Everyone in the place was bundled up pretty good, because it was VERY cold, even by Chicago standards. While trying to keep warm in the rather chilly terminal, a small group of people exit a freshly arrived flight and walk right toward us. Ordinarily, I wouldn't have given them more than a passing glance, but I was nearly blinded by the dazzling combination of spectacularly enormous cleavage, a full length fur coat, and a wedding ring with a diamond the size of Verne Troyer's head. I focused on that eye-popping combo for so long, that it wasn't until they passed about one foot to my left that I noticed the woman was the wife of an extremely recognizable middle-aged rocker sporting sunglasses in the dreary and dimly-lit afternoon...Dennis DeYoung! So, the woman with the cleavage was his LAAAAAAAAAAADYYYYYYYYYYYY.

FT Indie Rock Star Moment:

I went to an in-store at Good Records here in Dallas back in June to see one of my favs, Pedro The Lion, perform. It was a great show, as they rotated instruments and played one of my favorite PTL tunes, "Big Trucks." After the performance, I went up and shook the hand of David Bazan and gushed over Control while basically wetting myself the entire time. He was very, very gracious and friendly, and was more than happy to have his picture taken with me.

I was playing bass in this band that opened for Aimee Mann. She complimented my playing, and then I hit on her. She was amused, but flattered, and refused to leave Michael Penn for me. I was devestated, and yet, elated, because she signed my Til Tuesday LPs. She's a babe.

A different band I was in opened for Train, and on a different date for Matchbox 20. Both groups were dicks. Another time we were playing at ONU, opening for Third Eye Blind and Smashmouth, and both bands were ripped, and put on horrible shows. We avoided them. Same band opened at the Grog on separate occasions for Harvey Danger and Eve 6. Harvey Danger was very good. Eve 6 was very bad.

I interviewed Nerfherder on our college station, and had to drive them back to the Grog, because their ride got lost. Nice guys, great show.

I have others, but who cares?

I partied with Ultraspank and Kilgore one night after a show they did in Colorado Springs. The Ultraspank dudes were super-cool.

I did karaoke with members of Paper Airplane Pilots and Liquid Soul. The head of an Chicago-based indie label was there. That was pretty sweet.

I saw Sponge back in '96 when I was living in Philly. I was up in the balcony, and Vinnie showed up right next to us during the encore singing Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here." I told him the Midwest was proud of him, and he said "Thanks."

Ian McCulloch and Will Sargent – Having been a huge Echo & the Bunnymen fan, I was ecstatic when an English email buddy travelled over to see the band perform and pre-arranged for us to meet the band backstage. I had always heard that Ian was somewhat of a dick in person, so I was somewhat apprehensive about approaching him. He and Will were nice as can be, taking the time to chat with us. Totally made my night.

I met Ian McCulloch before a show in the '80s...the tour was for Ocean Rain. Me and two friends found out where the band was staying, we went to the hotel called his room from the lobby, invited him for a drink. He finally showed up after an hour and a half or so, we had luch and a few beers. He was a very nice, guy. Easy to talk to with a good sense of humour. And the show that night was great as well. An overwhelmingly positive experience!

Listening to Howard Stern this morning jogged my memory on my most favorite rock star moment. So big, I forgot it obviously.

When I worked back at Mayhem Records, we released a a CD by a band called LOS GUSANOS. The guitarist was CJ Ward (aka CJ Ramone).

So anywyay, we had thier CD Release party at Coney Island High on St. Marks, and we are all hanging out in the dressing room, and in walks Joey Ramone...

NOw the previous few months, I had gotten to know CJ and always told him of what a Ramones fan I was and was raised on them by my dad....So upon seeing Joey, he says he wants to introduce me to him....

So we did, and he was very nice. Spoke to him for a good 5 minutes as everyone in the room wanted to talk to him. I tried to get a picture with him, but he was very anti- having his picture taken at the time.. CJ explained to me, it was a rarity when Joey took voluntary pictures with fans.. Ahh well, it was amazing meeting one of my idols....

I love the Osbournes begging on British TV for their jewels to be returned, like their life is going to be impacted forever.

(Why can't people who have 2 million dollars in jewelry lying around invest in a safe or some sort of security system?)
