They are all over CA, in fact, so one need not have to go to LA to have the goodness that is In N Out.

Seconded. I try to get as much of that as I can every time I'm out there (in San Diego -- and no, I don't currently have any plans of ever going out there again any time soon).

Locally, I'd have to say Fuddruckers. Burger King is surprisingly good.

In-N-Out indeed. It's such an institution in so cal that I was floored when I met someone (who eats meat) who had lived her entire life in so cal without ever having heard of the place nevermind taste one of their burgers.

I will say this though...their fries are pretty average but their malts are spectacular.

Dogs n Suds in Grayslake, IL
Swanson's in Akron, OH (or is it stow?), the brown sugar burgers....
The Diner Grill (Irving Park and Ashland in Chicago)
There's a ton in Chicago, but Diner Grill is way solid and the clientele is like a Wes Anderson flick.

FUDDRUCKERS

No doubt about it. There is one here in Annapolis, but I don't go too often. We also have a Cheeburger Cheeburger, which isn't bad, but the burgers themselves aren't as good as Fudd's. Cheeburger Cheeburger gets a nod on the Frings and milkshakes, though.

P.S. Rodney, how dare you malign Fuddrucker's like that. Those pinkos in Oregon are getting to you, son.

THE Original In-n-Out drive-thru stand is still standing in my town of Baldwin Park, California (aka, "Home of the Original In-n-Out"). Started and owned by the Snyder Family who have had a rather tragic life story.

Ever try their Neapolitan Shake? Made up of all three flavours...mmmm, tasty goodness! I may have to stop by on the way home and make that my dinner.

Nope, you've got that backwards: the fries are awesome (you cannot go wrong with fresh-cut fries,) but the burgers themselves are nothing more than your everyday, average, tiny little piece of ground beef. It's their sauce that makes them so "special." If you're like me and don't eat burgers with all that slimy crap on them, you learn real quick who really has good tasting beef and who doesn't, and In-n-Out is perfectly average beef. The best fast-food burger, by far, is Whataburger, if you can get them to not salt the hell out of it (which is, admittedly, quite a feat.)

Hey LA folks - it has been YEARS since I've experienced the goodness of an In-N-Out burger. On the other hand, Fatburger(another longtime LA burger joint) has recently expanded to the NW and I have had the distinct pleasure of having some of their fine tasting burgers recently....can any of you LA folks offer a comparison of the two company's burgers to refresh my memory?

Charlie Beinlich's

Here is a review:
http://abclocal.go.com/wls/news/ward/04 ... arlie.html

And, to get an idea of the kind of place it is, the web site has about as many frills as the place itself. Still, a GREAT burger and they carmelize their onions right – all damn day.

Keep it simple: great meat, seasoned nicely, on a simple bun with good topings.

The goddamn best I've ever had (and I've had a lot).

I love the following burgers from these chains:

Carl's Jr -- The Six Dollar Burger, no mayo. Goddamn, I was majorly surprised when I first ate this burger -- it's the only burger from a fast food joint that I'll eat. Forget the fries cuz the burger alone will leave you stuffed.

Chili's -- Any of their burgers are top notch.

Astro's -- Avocado bacon cheeseburger, decadent, so fattening, but goddamn good!

TGIF -- Any Way You Want It burger..mmmm

Hamburger Hamlet -- Mushrooms with Swiss cheeseburger, jalapeños on the side on squaw bread. Mmmmm...

Your money is being held by a kid named Larry Sellers, who lives on Radcliffe, near the In and Out Burger.

The best burger is made at the Strang Tavern in the bustling community of Strang, Nebraska (population - 38 ).

The Strangburger is the hamburger to get if you're ever in the area.
