Looks like there's a trough in Texas that may turn it more northerly- if I was in Mobile, I'd be getting on I-10 and rolling east about now.

11:30 CDT - Category 5, sustained winds 175 mph, gusts over 200 mph. This is the storm that New Orleans has prayed would never happen for years. The city could, quite literally, be wiped out. New Orleans is completely below sea level and cautionary warnings are predicting the complete failure of the levee system if the storm eye crosses directly over. There are many scenarios that could affect the city differently, depending on wind direction and storm surge. It's not good, though. New Orleans could become Atlantis. I can't speak for oldbulee, but I'm in a high-ground area that is not really in danger of flooding. Our biggest fear now is wind damage and the loss of power for weeks possibly. I'll probably lose power sometime this evening, so please pray for us all in south LA, Mississippi and Alabama Gulf Coast. An Orleans parish official recently commented that this was "The Perfect Storm". Much love.

My thouhts are with you man. Are you planning on sticking it out ? If so , good luck and get back to us ASAP . Keep us posted as often as possible as it draws closer to you so we know if you still have your power. Once we don't here from you for a certain amount of time , we'll know you got a few rough days/weeks ahead of you.

Mother Nature really puts us humans down the totem pole a little eh ?

Look at this monster. WOW !

How can something as beautiful as this be so destructive?

Are you feelin the outer bands yet ? When is it supposed to make landfall?

Down here in Ft. Lauderdale we lost our power a few hours before it came ashore.

It's gotten pretty breezy here, but no precip yet. They're predicting landfall in T-minus 16 hrs.

Is there something I'm missing? Does Opa have something against Louisiana? That's fucked up.

Woah I've just found out about this.

About 5 or 6 years ago we had a major storm hit here. Not quite as powerful as Katrina but up there, 140mph winds plus stronger gusts. It was so strong it wasn't blowing the trees over it was spliting them down the middle.

Our building took some damage but luckily all the debris blew down the street and didn't come crashing through the ceiling.

Good luck to all involved, you're in for a tense night!

I remember this. Caught all unawares. I just saw a special on it recently on Public Broadcasting.

Shit, everyone down there get videocameras. If you survive (which I hope you do), they should either be worth money on America's Funniest Home Videos, or sumpin'.
