Im not trying to be edgy or controversial or anything, but this is such a boring album.

OK... I've lived too long. I can't process how anyone with an "ear" for alternative pop and rock could listen to the guitar solo(s) on the title track, hear the building tension, be enveloped by the indie-stairway-to-heaven power, and then reach the apotheosis of release and resolution, and not have the pulse race and palms sweat. One of the great moments in 20th century music. You must be bored with orgasms.

Also, Verlaine's neurotic, needy, edgy vocals might annoy someone, but bore?

This definitely describes me, but there's no way I'm buying all these freakin' albums.

I think there was a band called Nirvana that put out a really good album once. Might consider throwing them up there.

Updated again. I've got 104 albums on the list now. I will eventually cut it down to 75. So feel free to continue to add your picks or debate albums that are already on the list.

Everyone, quit posting your favourite fogging indie or indie-ish album. There has to be some sort of UNIVERSAL appeal, if it should be on this list, and just because it appeal to YOU, dunot mean it appeal to ME.

Alright, there's my debate for every album on that list that I don't already have.

What would you put up there? Albums that you feel anyone who claimed they were even remotely into indie music must own. List some other choices.

I'm aiming for one album per artist. So feel free to debate which album is the crucial one to own from an artist. Also, feel free to say if an artist or album really doesn't need to be on the list at all. Such as it's just not that well known or important to warrant it, even if it is a decent album.

The list I've come up with so far looks like:

Beck - Mellow Gold
Bjork - Debut
Blur - Parklife
Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady
Chemical Brothers - Exit Planet Dust
Clash - London Calling
Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living All Over Me

Killers - Somebody Told Me [CD-Single]
Liz Phair - Exile In Guyville
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime

Looking over the list, you maybe should change the title of this thread to list of albums that may or may not be culturally important, may or may not be indieish, and may or may not be any good that one or more boarders like.

Crooked Rain over Slanted? In no universe is Crooked Rain even in the same league as Slanted and Enchanted. Seriously, Range Life?

Also, yesterday I played Marquee Moon for three of my bandmates (all aged 22-25) and all three said they were going out and getting it this week. It's one of those albums you either get or you don't. There's really no in between.

Also, I think the Jam is problematic because you could make a case for any of their albums. I think In The City is a better way to get into them than anything else, personally.

The most accessable issue should also not apply to Sonic Youth, because really, any of their 1986-1990 albums have accessability issues. If you're going for easiest to listen to, you'd obviously choose Dirty, but Dirty is a weaker album than any of its four predecessors. Daydream Nation is their most complete statement by far.

It started off as my attempt to just compile a list of 50 indie rock albums that seemed like must-haves. I'll admit it's grown to a ridiculous length and to include some ridiculous choices. But that's okay for now. I'm waiting another day or so and then I'm going to introduce phase two, where everyone votes for what they consider the most important five or ten from the list. I'll compile the votes that way, then continue from there.

Haha. Yeah, there should be about 10 albums on this list, tops.

It'd be hard enough just to get people to agree on that many.

Again...seriously, Range Life? Maybe the worst song Pavement ever performed, and that's saying a lot.

Also, "swing your nachos like you just don't care" cannot be ironic enough to ever be funny OR clever.

Most. disappointing. follow-up. ever.

A couple I didn't see yet (but, admittedly may have missed):

Modern Lovers - Modern Lovers
Hüsker Dü - New Day Rising
Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God
Meat Puppets - Up On the Sun
