Can someone actually explain to me the reasoning behind the open container law?

If you have a sober driver I have never really understood the problem with an open container.

Are they afraid that the drunks will impede the driver in some way?

I know that into the late 90s it was legal to have an open container in GA, as long as it was poured into a cup.
So, Beer in a Can or bottle = Illegal
Beer in a Dixie Cup = Perfectly legal

I am thinking Tom Murphy had a hand in this.

broken window theory? if we let it appear that we condone people drinking on the street then society falls apart, but if it appears that all is proper then we'll hold on together?

Like i said, I don't know, but I suspect Tom Murphy like his beer in a Dixie Cup. Or, more likely, liked to wrap one Dixie Cup in a Paper Towel, and put the other cup around it, you know a redneck coozy. Then Fill the glass with Bourbon and Ice and drive around in his pickup with no seat belt on.

see, you're trying to apply logic & common sense to alcohol laws

this is ALWAYS a mistake (as I post from a municipality free of liquor)

I think they're worried you might hit a bump and spill your drink.
