gotta agree on Doves.

The New Pornos is awesome and Spoon is pretty great too.

Also think The Decemberists follow up was a big step forward.

I can see how many people aren't feeling the Doves album. I'll admit that as a whole it's not as good as The Last Broadcast, but the songs on it that i do dig, i can still listen to today, and i enjoy them greatly. A few of the tracks are probably the best they've ever written [Almost Forgot Myself, Sky Sky Stars Falling].

Letdowns for me this year....

M83
Sleater Kinney
Super Furry Animals
Mercury Rev
Sufjan Stevens

a few more, but...

Not that I think its a disappointment--more like "grower of the year" to me, but how you gonna follow up ST&C?

Spoon, Gimme Fiction – I truly don’t understand the raves for this album. I understand that Spoon is great but this record doesn’t hold a candle to anything else in their catalog for me.

With the release of each of their albums, Spoon have been taken to task for not "being as good as the last one." Time, so far, has proven the naysayers wrong on every complaint. Personally, I don't see that Gimme Fiction will be any different. When the next Spoon album is released, every review will start out with the phrase "what made Gimme Fiction so great..." (and then go on to compare the new one unfavorably). With the exception of "Was It You?", GF is as perfect a Spoon album as one could hope for.

truth.

sfa's still a great band, even if you think their new album is a disappointment. but that's just my take. I happen to like every album they've released for whatever reason. Maybe I'm just really fond of their live show.

Um...yeah, it was called The Last Broadcast. New Order's album is malarky.

Sigur Ros is an exception. I like that album a lot. Not sure if it will make my top 10, but it's definitely a grower.

I don't know what i expected from MMJ, but am listening to it right now, and it is fucking awesome. Some weird/interesting choices (Like during "Off the REcord, when they bring in AIR to finish the song?) but Jebus this is awesome. Same as the last one, will be a great fall chill out album (Though Fall IS NEVER COMING TO SOUTH ALABAMA!)

Wouldn't that technically be Magnolia Electric Co.'s first album since it's the first release under that name other then the live album.

When I saw them a few months ago (before I had heard the record),"Off the Record" simply destroyed live. I wasn't so sure about the drum machine, but when they shredded through an extended outro for the song, I was sold.

I loved It Still Moves and I really like Z, just in a different way. Top 3 of the year for me.

Yeah, whatever, but in reality it's the first proper follow-up to S:O's Magnolia Electric Co.

edit: On the subject of MMJ, It Still Moves never did much for me. Z seems much better although it may also be a little too long (one of the main drawbacks to ISM).

I think the Doves record is pretty darn good. Not as darn good as that damn Last Broadcast. But pretty darn alright. Very craftsmanlike.

On the whole though, my vibe on most of the albums in this thread is either negative or just generally disinterested.

Liked enough to buy:
Sufjan
M83
Sigur Ros
Bands local to Boston

Could see listening to in the van and not outright hating (err, background music):
Spoon
New Porn
SFA (but come on, they make some of the most tolerable music, so this is redundant)
M. Ward

Yeah, so. Follow-ups was the topic, right?

Super Furry Animals
Hot Hot Heat (2 good songs)
Green Day (not that I like them anymore but their last 2 singles off the new album have been embarrassing)
Weezer (truly awful)

NIN (I wrote them off after The Fragile but With Teeth is pretty good, though it probably won't make my year end list)

I agree that this record is excellent. I think it is their best work, but perhaps it is just the one that I like the most. Regardless...

Anyone who thinks M. Ward's follow up is a disappointment must be stoned or just plain dumb.

I always thought the music-lovers conceptual use "follow up" was either for a second release (sophomore...often jinx) or after a breakthrough smash hit.

So... we talk about Sufjan.... I think Illinoise is better than Seven Swans but not necessarily better than Michigan. Is this rating a follow up or merely talking about the most recent release of an artist with multiple releases out? Kids, we need to be careful with language or the struggle for meaning will be lost!

Doves... most recent not as good as last.
M. Ward ... better than last.
Spoon ... after initially sounding better to me than the last, didn't hold up.
Beck ... continue to slip... to the point where I can no longer enjoy the first 4-5 that I liked... in three years he's doing state fairs.
Sleater-Kinney .... better than their last
New Porns ... sounded gooder than the last at first.... is not holding up for me
Six organs of admittance... the best they've done
American Analog Set... same...but so what
Super Furry Animals...zzzzzzzzzzzzz
Josh Rouse, Malkmus.... holding even
Architecture in Helsinki ... not as interesting as previous release.

So this marks some disappointments, but none of these, to me, is a "follow up" in the sense defined above.

Franz Ferdinand would put out a follow up this year.

Every album of theirs has been a grower for me. I found Phantom Power to be really boring for quite a while, and then suddenly one day it became really wonderful. I don't expect much different from this one, either. Those are the best albums, anyway - the ones that just don't hit you over the head at first. Those are the ones I'll be listening to 5 years from now, while everything else I was raving about the day they were released are probably long gone from my collection.
