and still, nobody will give props to Armed Love. Have you guys just not ever heard that album or am I crazy? I'll put it up on YSI when I get back to Redlands. PM if youd like a listen. I believe ive got some tasty B-sides (your host: LooGars big brother) of INC as well.

If you like rock and roll, you'll dig this album.

(holy crap, he produced melanie c's northern star??? wtf?!?! that may just erase everything good he ever did right there.)

Armed Love is The (International) Noise Conspiracy's unreleased record.

It is punk with some horns, etc...If I had to guess, I would say you will really dig it. Nothing like Palo Alto ;) Bloor HATES that fucking rekkid.

This is easily their best work. Fucking owns. Try to grasp the irony of driving around a massive new truck pumping your fist to songs like "Communist Moon"...something Bloor peeped me to that I was able to experience myself this week with the purchase of the new Truckster.

How do you 'produce' an album without touching a single slider, knob, button, mic, etc.?

It's no wonder that all the descriptions in that article of Rick's 'sound' are so incredibly vague.

i might give you that.

have you ever produced or engineered anything, though? Do you know the difference?

ok, so I'm assuming not.

and as to Ricks sound....there is a Rubin sound and RS actually explains it pretty good,,,,,,,Read: Dude invented a style of production for hiphop records and adapted it to his work...........

Its not as obvious to the average Joe like Jon B over-layering (and feeling the need to play shit himself with mediocrity that he could have hired better) or Brendan recording in a carport or Albini ruining records in mixdown or Vig applying MORE compression or Ethan Jons using his daddy/uncle's name in an attempt to apply "just a bit more reverb, mate" etc etc etc............... But Rubins records, for the most part have a certain consistent sound that is.............umph. it works

Something should be said for success.

It's ironic to have the stated goal of a sparse, stripped down sound in terms of no extraneous instrumentation but then have too loud mixing or mastering which is anything but pure. I understand the market forces behind the loud/flat movement but it's sad because dynamic range is so naturally pleasing to the ear.

Digital mastering has killed tons of records in the past 15 years.

Remember when CD's first came out? Ugh.

Then, it seemed like people gave a shit about mastering for a little bit.

Now, it doesnt matter. "Mastering" is now done on a big ol' computer that compresses everything, mix be damned and I doubt mastering engineers even listen to the records.

Isn’t it a bit glib to assume that because one does or does not play music they don’t understand what a producer does and doesn’t do? Especially since “producer” in name has become so drastically different? It can apply to some asshat with a ponytail yelling at the engineer to make it sound “tinnier” and not having any fucking clue what that means. I mean, the differences between Brian McTear and Andy Warhol could just about fill the fuckin' grand canyon. It is totally in my opinion that most of the time engineers are more instrumental in shaping the sound of a record than the producers. There are exceptions, but not many.

And as far as his rap production, all he really did was sub AC/DC and Aerosmith samples for the standard funk and soul ones. Shit, he still does it. Innovative, yeah, but let’s not go crazy.

i'm too busy to go into the Albini thing right now, but oh i will.

Label BS is all I know. Thing that sucks is, the label still isn't gonna put enough behind it to make it worthwhile.

Did everyone who wanted it get it?

This is always my argument against Moby, by the way.
