Oh I bought it.

It's just not as good.

I have a very sad face, too; I would hope that wouldn't prevent me from getting laid.

Had you never heard the leak, you'd think nothing of it and love it the same as you love the leak. You're just more used to the leaked version.

I don't see anything wrong with most of the Elizondo versions, save for "Not About Love," in which the new drums really feel tacked on. Personally, I think some of the Brion versions are just too damned depressing. She apparently felt the same way, too.

Just saw this article from Reuters about Jon Brion....

Jon Brion Article

One interesting quote...."I didn't even like the version that got leaked on the Internet. It was very different from the way we cut it. It was mixed in a way to make it as radio-friendly as possible," said Brion, who prides himself on shaping sounds in unorthodox and progressive ways."

Or if I had never heard the leaked version, had brion never signed on to even do anything for the project, I would have thought the Elizondo version was good but I'd reach for When the Pawn 9 times out of 10.

Luckily, I have the leaked version. Look, I'm not telling anyone what to like. I'm just saying that I think the Brion versions are creatively, and sonically, superior to the Elizondo versions. Sure, part of it is familiarity. But what's wrong with a good down and dirty depressing track? The whole point of making a daring record is to make the right choice for the song. Shit, listen to the lyrics for Not About Love, or O'Sailor, or Red Red Red, or anything else on that album. Then listen, really listen to both versions of each song. Then decide for yourself which one communicates the emotion of the lyric and the melodic line better. Yeah, I've got a bias towards Brion to begin with, shit, i want to BE him. But compare them side by side on a good stereo, and see which one communicates more effectively. Which versions inspire Fiona herself to dig deep?

People can slice it any way they want to, but as far as I'm concerned, I've got both versions, and I believe the Brion one to be the hipper of the two. You can believe whatever you want.

I haven't heard the Brion sessions, but I really like the released version. Did the Brion version have that cool Fiona vocal harmony at the end of "O' Sailor?" I could listen to that all damn day.

There's only one track that I am genuinely dissappointed with and that's the remake of "Used to Love Him" which is now known as "Tymps (The sick in the head song)." That corny beat wouldn't sound out of place on a Britney Spears album. The original version with the jazzy percussion is far superior. I have both versions so I don't really care. If you have both versions, you can always look at the official EM as a remix album.

It's clear to see now why Fiona was initially pissed that the original version leaked. People got too attached to it and now don't want the version she intended to release.

We could go on forever about this. And I don't think she expressed ANY opinion when it got leaked. She didn't seem pissed about the free fiona campaign either. She still gigs with brion doing versions of these songs that are far closer to their collaboration than elizondo's.

When I add it up in my mind, it smacks of the label putting pressure on her, and spin on the story. Maybe I'm missing something.

Does she dry-hump the piano bench like Tori?

Nah, no dry humping. Half of the time she has somebody else playing the piano so she can be out in the front. She just flaps her arms around a lot, and she'll occasionally segue from singing into growling - which she doesn't do on CD. There were a couple of songs where she'd finish singing and then she'd just shout what appeared to be random words as if somebody is standing in front of her and she's telling them off. We could never hear what she was saying because she'd be away from the mic. Raised a few eyebrows.

Well if she really does have panic attacks, that's probably a coping mechanism. A weird one, but still.

Panic! At the Fiona Apple show... should be an emo-pop supergroup. Or, just, y' know, the boys in Panic! At the Disco playing instruments while Fiona wails up-top of them.

Or maybe Fiona Apple Records, and get sued by both Apple computers AND the Beatles.
