Number one, I've always said the whole ratings thing is a sham.
It's all based on "Nielsen" households, otherwise one would have to assume that every tv in the world contains some sort of high tech tracking device for what shows you watch at all time.
Now I have personally never heard of or encountered ANYONE here or in person who is a nielsen household. Which means there truly is a giant hole within this whole who watches what bullshit.
Bcause everyone I know, family included, watches Arrested Development.
I seriously have thought about writing a letter inquiring about this because good shows get canceled and muck like 90% of the comedies on CBS survive.
My dad (with sisters & parents) was a Nielsen family back in the 60s for a while when you wrote it down and mailed it in. Apparently they got pretty slack, so every week they would try to fill it in after the fact, and my grandfather would always say, "I don't remember and don't really care, but whatever you do don't write down that piece of shit 'Mod Squad'."
Thing is, for everyone you know that watches "Arrested Development", I can't think of a single person in my daily travels that has told me that they watch it. That would be somewhat inconsistent, because all the people on this board and others seem to be pretty rabid about the show, signing online petitions and what-not.
Compare that with the shows I frequently hear about in passing:
Desperate Housewives; CSI; Lost; House, MD; Extreme Makeover; ER (I didn't even realize it was still on); Cold Cases; Family Guy; etc.
If memory serves, there are more Nielsen households today than ever before. As technology has gotten better and cheaper, Nielsen reports are automated, i.e. the box automatically reports what you watch and for how long. I also think that they concentrate on getting pretty sturdy samples across demographic and geographic information available. When you think of the gobs and gobs of advertising dollars and production dollars, Nielsen has a pretty damn big stake in getting it right.
