I don't think they're cheaper. Mebbe their cred came roaring out of the hood and all the white kid posers latched on to them.

My theory is that they were designed by B&W to look ghetto in order to give them irony-cred with hipsters. I'm not kidding - did they exist before like 5 years ago?

EDIT: that WAS my theory, until I found this:

when I started smoking I smoked Merits (5 members of my immediate family did, all from stealing them out of my mom's packs) and people would invariably ask me "what, are those cheaper or something?" to which I'd have to reply "nah, just more pathetic"

How much is a pack going for these days? I was a Marlboro Red man up until two years ago.

Varies wildly. GA usually has some of the lowest prices in the nation. I'd say, somewhere between 3.50-4.50 in the store and usually 5.00 in a bar. I only buy one pack a week now (for Bingo; seriously, if I stand there and have people blow smoke on me, I'm going to at least get something out of it

I first heard of them from my buddy the Doktor, when he moved down here from Philly in '95.

I smoked Marlboro Lights for a while, but never got into the whole dainty cigarette thing. Ultra Lights? Why even bother? Gimme a Marlboro or a Winston, hell even one of them Kamel Reds.

I did Reds in high school then went to Marlboro Lights in College until I got a pack that honestly tasted like the chemicals that we all know are in there; since then, its been mostly the Camel Lights.

Reds are too fucking strong dude. They're good for one but try to go out to a bar with a pack.

yeah I can remember them being pretty huge here around then. At least in my high school.

Reds are gross, but lots of bars around here don't carry anything but menthols and marlboros, so I get reds because lights make me super hung over. I know, it doesn't make any sense but I swear to god it's true.

my question is what's with the tobacco-fascists?

yes we know they're bad for you and still do it (if some only occasionally). excessive drinking and inhaling exhaust fumes in the city is bad for you too. . . as are hamburgers, ice cream, and $2 whores. and we all have those on occasion, right?

i, myself, prefer the occasional chesterfield--hey if it's good enough for ronnie. . .

no, we just refer to the Doktor and all his Philly cronies as mooks.....I just assume (wrongly I'm sure, but who knows) that everyone in Philly is like them.

They're $3.19 a pack in Nashville. They were around $7 a pack in NYC.

Yeah, I've been smoking Parliaments for about 4 or 5 years now. Marlboro Lights before that. I smoke them because I like the recessed filter.

Reds make me want to puke, and talk about a hangover from hell.
Ultra Lights + shit-ton of alcohol = waking with a faint headache and bad breath. / Reds + shit-ton of alcohol = waking with a migraine, cold sweats, body aches and wanting to eat Krystal and pour soup on your chest.

I smoke Ultra Lights now (just started about 2 months ago) because 3 of my family members who are non-smokers have come down with lung cancer (one cousin died a month ago). This is my way of cutting down as much as possible and trying to ween myself off of nicotine by way of small doses until I can *maybe* quit.

When I started, port royal rollies--when I quit, dunhill blues or marlboro reds. Got expensive and I was getting bronchitis all the damn time. I loved being a smoker - if I was one of those folks whose lungs hold up for a decade or so I'd still be at it.
