Is this the "I got the pistols, so I get the pesos?" song. If so, I'll bang a triangle to that.

It most certainly is.

That song is fucking awesome.

I was a huge fan of The Refreshments in high school. Their second album was as good as their debut, which had "Banditos" as well as several other solid songs.

I'm surprised I don't know more of those. I used to listen to WHFS all the time (local "alternative" radio station).

I loved (and still do) V.A.S.T.

VAST is great. He definitely brought something new to the table with his debut.

How about Folk Implosion, "Natural One", does that belong on that list?

I still own both Refreshments albums, which is everything they did, I believe. In fact, I listened to the second one last week. Solid effort.

I guess I'm a wee bit older than the original poster because I wasn't really listening to the radio in the 90s much. I can't recall many "indie" songs being played outside of ones mentioned (and even though I'm only in my 30s I feel as if I'm having a senior moment because I can't remember much of anything, heh). Annnnyyywwayyy...I do remember hearing Belly's "Feed the Tree" which at the time I was suprised to hear any 4AD artist outside of Modern English (80s) on the radio.

Pretty sure that one even made the Top 40 ( briefly, but still ) , so it's probably a little too well known.

Sometimes it's hard to remember there was actually a time where Lou Barlow could have a Top 40 hit. It seems so unlikely now...

I remember a time when Slowdive and Swervedriver were in decent rotation around Chicago.

That song is fucking awesome. So is Battle Flag.

I still rock my refreshments CD often...stands the proverbial Test'0'Time

PM me if you miss it real bad.

Would SELF qualify for this as well? "So low" was a hot single, in the MKE at least, back in '95-6....

Kay Hanley. Interesting trivia, Peter Gammons, the 70-something MLB writer loves her music and touts her anytime he can. Odd.

Not so odd when you consider Gammons equals... RAPE. In which case, Hanley is a much better subject than PG's other Bostonian pop-music love, the Dropkick Murphy's.

I saw Roger Cline and the Peacemakers last month. He did a few of the Refreshments Hits.

Babylon Zoo - "Spaceman"
I'm not sure if that's much of a "gem".
I remember Moist - "Push" being pretty good. I think I heard it on a CMJ comp mid '90's.

exactly the song i was thinking of when i saw this topic. love that song. unfortunately, i bought the album based on the single. . . twice. . . about 2-3 years apart when i had forgotten that it wasn't a great album and heard the song again. dammit!

yeah, and 311 is totally my most guilty pleasure.

That's the thing... Before Weezer ever become irono-contrarian trendy, I had never heard Weezer (1994) called the Blue Album. 311's '95 self-titled, though? Yes... Yes I did.

for a good while 311 was well above a guilty pleasure for me, and this was well after they saw their popularity peak with the self titled. i haven't heard their latest two, and i don't hold them in such high regard as i did a few years ago, but their albums are still great.

I'm glad no one has soiled this thread with that fucking Geggy Tah song about driving in my car.

Yes, and I fucking hate that damn song. I got my intro to the band before "Pepper" when I bought Independent Worm Saloon after catching "Who Was In My Room Last Night?" on Alternative Nation or 120 Minutes or Buzz Bin or some shit like that.

i thought about mentioning any of cracker's singles for this category but they were (and continue to be) played to absolute death so that kind of leaves them exempt. my favorite is still "i hate my generation".

It's songs like "Pepper" that forced Top 40 radio to splinter into multiple spin-off formats, like "Adult Top 40" . I remember stations getting around the band's name by calling them the "BH Surfers" if they played the song at all.

I also remember hearing Metallica's "One" briefly scrape the Top 40, & how fucking weird it was to hear Casey Kasem intro it on "American Top 40" .

The Refreshments were huge at my college - everyone liked them - saw them live once as well. Pretty good bar band.
