I've grown out of this (random CD piles all over the place), but this fits perfectly into a corner of my place. You could switch to 8 or 10-footers with more blocks for support in the middle. Industrial-looking yet expandable.

Thanks to Tim for the heads-up!

I wouldn't mind an answer to this question, either. I need to upscale a notch.

I just did the store locator thingy, so maybe that will lead me to find one. You make these or something, right?

Bad news is, they're not cheap. They hold a buttload (my setup is here- this is about 2,000 discs: http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?p ... ost1267605 ). However, they're sturdy and they're made in the US, down by Los Angeles.

And you need to put a finish on 'em. Fastest & cheapest way is Briwax, a colored (8 colors) wax. Briwax.com

This is pretty close to what I have, except I used red paver bricks. Mine is 6 feet wide, with a column of bricks in the middle. I've got 2000-ish CD's & they all fit - with a liiiiiiittle bit of room left.

On an old thread on the CMJ board, somebody mentioned these:

http://www.can-am.ca/cdvideo.htm

It looks like they lock kind of like a filing cabinet--not that a thief couldn't carry them out module by module. For the paranoid, I think the best storage is a fireproof filing cabinet/safe/locker with lock combined with CD-R and/or dual hard drive backup (preferably with one off-site). I was the victim of theft once and wouldn't dream of of an on display open rack.

I believe they are just glass blocks.

Yeah, that one's a little less sturdy lookin' than mine. lol. I'd post a link to a pic of mine on my message board, but I've got security measures in place that only let members see stuff.

Mine's just boards 'n' bricks...nothing else. If you construct it carefully on a solid floor base you should be OK.

Max is correct - they are glass blocks. 6"x6" (6x8 on the bottom, because they were out of the 6x6s when I needed more), with 6' 1x6 boards.

Nice guy, and turns out he reviews movies, so he was generous enough to throw in copies of Shawshank, Casino, Goodfellas & the James Dean collection. Sweet, right? Only problem...in my giddiness I totally misjudged how big the f'n thing is. Can't get it into my house. Gotta find some way to take it apart & put it together again. Idiot.

My buddy has one of those..Yeah it's pretty fuckin big. He got it at tower and had to carry it home on the train from work(in the box)..The box was so heavy, it turned part of his arm purple in one sport..

for completeness sake, someone should mention the Boltz stuff (unless someone already did and I overlooked it). Quite expensive- but sturdy as heck. We have a DVD rack with 2 extentions.

Starting 12/6, Ikea will be selling a unit that holds 576 for US$40 called "Alleby". If you download the catalog from their site, it's on page 5.

my wife doesn't like those boltz ones. I thought since she is scandinavian she would like the modern stuff, and more importantly because it's expensive, but nope, she likes me to have wood ones instead.

I have an idea for a huge rack, because I need one - let me see if I can explain. 6" wide boards for the horizontal portions, some kind of pipe for the vertical parts, however high they'd need to be. Let me explain further: the pipes would have holes drilled in them at some appropriate height to make enough for CDs, then a cotter pin would support the next highest board, and so on. Does that make any sense? It seems like a fairly simple solution that could actually look pretty cool, and might actually be very cheap.

No, not really. Yet mostly.

First of all -- do you mean the holes are drilled into the pipes, or into the boards? I suspect you meant the boards. So you slip your pole through the hole (!), and then lock it in on the underside with a pin? Yes, does sound cool, simple, elegant, cheap.

EDIT: Actually, you meant both, didn't you? A hole for the pole, and a hole for the pin, in board and pole, respectively, neh?

Yes, you got it - even with my very bad explanation. I think I'm going to have to set about constructing this bad boy now . . .

Another cool idea that you might consider: use the black pipe that used for natural gas as the supports between your shelves. The pipe is threaded on either end and you have to buy the little ends for it as well.

It can get a little pricy if you are doing a lot of shelves but it looks really cool. I originally saw it at a buddys house who had made some in tables and then me and an old roomate constructed a HUGE entertainment center.

I might have a pic.

It came from Ikea. Got 'em several years ago. I can only assume they still make this line. It's called ROBIN.

As for as how many it holds, i'm not sure, but a rough estimate would be
200.

Before I started this thread I found someone who had posted his construction plans for racks he'd built out of plumbing pipes. Said it held a couple thousand.

I ruled it out quickly. I didn't think it looked very nice, the parts cost around $400, and it took him like 5 hours to assemble. Not a very appealing combo to me.

I looked at those Boltz racks but it would cost me a lot to buy them in bulk to accomodate my entire collection. I'm thinking $1500-2000 if memory serves. I also don't think they look that nice although they probably look better full than they do in the pictures.

Diggity how stable are your racks. I'm leaning towards something similar but wonder how smart that is given that I'm in earthquake territory.
