Even the safest of riders can and do get hit. My brother got SUVeed (yeah, it's a word now) a few years ago even though he was riding at a leisurely pace in the bike lane and lit up like a Christmas tree. Luckily he escaped with only a few scrapes. I got hit in college once, but that was my own damn fault.
