The Cure album from 1984 was The Top wasn't it? Not close to their best but every time Indie 103.1 plays a song from this album I turn it up. The Remastered edition of it might bring this album to life and it's next along with The Glove.

My favorite would have to be the Smith's brilliant Hatful of Hollow album, which I happen to like best out of all of the Smiths albums. It doesn't really even count because it's a collection but there is nothing that is even close to this good that came out that year. Not even that big of a Smith's fan, truth be told, but this is mesmerizing and played it about a month ago and loved it. Probably the only reason why I remembered it came out that year.

The purple one is brilliant as well but it's no HoH

Yeah, I omitted Hatful of Hollow for precisely the fact that it's a comp. Still, it's an excellent choice.

I don't get the inclusion of the Let's Active album in the list. Nobody's gonna vote for it - unless Monty's true identity is Mitch Easter - and nobody should vote for it.

I've never heard Let's Active.

I voted Minutemen.

I figured I'd get a query about this - I included it because I like it, but in retrospect it probably doesn't belong.

This is cool, Spade. If you get stuck on the lighter years, check this out.

If it doesn't count then place my vote for the Mats. Lloyd Cole, This Mortal Coil and Cocteau Twins would be very close behind. Making Prince drop down quite a bit, what a great year for music.

M. Oldfield's 'Discovery' and R. Hitchcock's 'I Often Dream of Trains' are some other favs from '84.

I also went with Purple Rain, but it was tough as I love Let it Be and Ocean Rain a whole lot.

I voted for Minutemen to keep it simple. But the ninny in me feels obligated to point out that your list doesn't include:

Echo & the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain
Pogues - Red Roses for Me
Lloyd Cole & the Commotions - Rattlesnakes
REM - Reckoning

I'd rank those 4 higher than anything on your list other than the Minutemen or The Fall

YES!!! Glaring omissions.

"Unforgettable Fire" just barely nips "Let It Be" and "Purple Rain".

Just barely.

And I'll jump on the "this is a good thread idea" bandwagon while I'm at it.

Of course, there's a danger this thread could lead to discussions about music.

Don't think that I am.

But -
wikipedia Wrote:
Mitch Easter is a musician and producer, most notable for his work with R.E.M., though he has worked with many other acts and was the frontman for the band Let's Active.

Born in 1954 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Easter was deeply involved in music from an early age. He played in a number of school bands, some of them with his childhood friend Chris Stamey. The two eventually formed The Sneakers, who released a number of singles and an album in the late 1970s. Stamey and fellow bandmate Will Rigby eventually formed The dB's and moved to New York. Easter did likewise, but soon returned to Winston-Salem to set up Drive-In Studio in his parents' garage.

Drive-In Studio became an integral part of the local indie-rock scene, recording a number of bands at knock-down rates. It was at this time that Easter formed Let's Active with then-girlfriend Faye Hunter and drummer Sara Romweber. Around the same time, Easter worked with R.E.M. to record their debut single Radio Free Europe. This initial work led to a number of collaborations with the band, with Easter producing their debut EP and (with Don Dixon) their first two albums. Let's Active toured with R.E.M., which led to a recording contract with I.R.S._Records.

Let's Active released an EP and three albums before splitting up. Easter had by then become known primarily as a producer, and worked with a number of artists, some of them perhaps because of his influence on the early R.E.M., Pavement included.

So, he could be my dad. Don't know on that.

I'll go with this. I'd put "Reckoning" right there too. These might be my favorite four records of the entire decade.

jangle pop, yeah. If you like Shoes and the dBs and the like, with a little more of an edge to it, Let's Active is the band for you.

Hey, I don't think anybody's mentioned this.

Probably my 3rd favorite of that year after The Minutemen and The Fall.

My lord...

How dare you force me to choose between "Double Nickels" and "Purple Rain".

Today I'm going for the skinny MoFo w/the high voice...and I'll probably regret it big time tomorrow
