Phish
(an infamous show amongst fans...)
12/07/97 (Sun) Ervin J. Nutter Center - Dayton, OH
Set 1: AC/DC Bag > Psycho Killer > Jesus Just Left Chicago, My Mind's Got a Mind of Its Own, It's Ice > Swept Away > Steep > It's Ice, Theme From the Bottom, Tube > Jam* > Tube**, Jam Reprise* > Slave to the Traffic Light

Set 2: Timber (Jerry) > Wolfman's Brother > Boogie on Reggae Woman# > Reba, Gyute^, Possum, E: A Day in the Life

Comment: *Post-"Izabella" jam from 12-06-97 Auburn Hills. Slowed down, stopped, started again (about five or six times). **After "Tube" returns and ends, the house lights go off and they stop playing. Then the Jam* is reprised. #Stevie Wonder cover (second time played - last played 03-21-88 Set I). ^With whistled second verse.

I am partial to the show from the night before, mentioned therein, 12/6/97 Auburn Hills, MI, because I was there and was silly enough not to continue on to Dayton when the band was they're absolute hottest.

Set II, specifically: Tweezer->Isabella->Twist->Piper, Sleeping Monkey, Tweezer Reprise.

I went to the Albany shows a week later that were both completely off the hook.

I wouldn't mind hearing it again - but I'm sure it deserves its own thread...

the first thing that came to mind was that the first time i saw stone temple pilots at MSG in '96 or '97, steven tyler and joe perry came out and they did "sweet emotion" and probably another one i can't remember. i honestly had forgotten that it ever happened until just now.

also i was at the much maligned "field day festival" in 2003. i didn't pay to go. and it rained all day. but i did get to see my morning jacket, blur, the beastie boys, and radiohead. i could have seen beck, but he got hit in the face with some lighting equipment backstage and had to be taken to the hospital instead.

There was a very loose vibe.

First half of the show: it wass just Jeff and an acoustic, doing UT songs. He opened with "Gun", if I remember correctly and also did versions of "Acuff Rose", "The Long Cut", and "Screen Door" (I think).

Then, he introduced the band and they played through a bunch of songs from AM, which were solid, if unspectacular.

Walking out, I remember thinking that it had been a helluva night, between Pegboy and Wilco. And that Wilco showed promise. They were fun but didn't blow me away. I was more taken with hearing Jeff do the UT songs solo. And, at that time, I was more of a Jay kinda guy anyway. (And was up until Being There came out of nowhere.)

Good night. Good show.

I don't know if I'd brag about them but....

1984: Duran Duran at the Omni, Atlanta (I was a wee lass of 13; Omni no longer exists); have since seen them multiple times in Vegas, Atlanta and Portland with the original lineup.
1987: Depeche Mode with OMD, Atlanta
1985-1988: R.E.M. too many times to remember
1988: Let's Active
1986/1987: INXS
1986/1987: New Order
1987: Love and Rockets
1988: 7 Seconds at the Metroplex (rawr!)
1988: Metallica with the Cult opening (the Cult sucked major ass)
1989: The Cure, Prayer Tour
1990: Fugazi (this is where I met my husband for the first time!)
1990: David Bowie Sound+Vision tour
1990: Sonic Youth
1990: Living Colour
1990: Concrete Blonde (Bloodletting tour)
1992/2002/2004: Luka Bloom, in Atlanta, Chicago and Boston respectively
2002: David Gray in London
2005: Bauhaus (the first time for me, and was well worth it)

Oh, I'm sure there are others, but I can't remember them all. Again, not really sure if they're brag-worthy, but some of the bands aren't around anymore for various reasons.

upfront at the arcade fire show at the troubadour. that won't ever happen again.

vip box seats at a bjork show at the hollywood bowl 3 yrs. ago. my friend gave the tickets to me, and there is NOTHING like being in those seats at a place like the hollywood bowl.

seeing the cure play to an audience of about 75 people with robert smith standing only 3 feet away from me... granted it was for a tv show, but they played 3 songs and that shit was just fuckin' magical for me.

those are the few that come to my mind.... i can't remember much at the moment.

whatever, dude. I'd say probly '99.

I saw the aforementioned "Remain In Light" Phish show, The Great Went and a bunch of other notables including the famous "Burger Ball" show at Lawewood Ampitheatre.

Nothing else really legendary I can think of though plenty of good shows....

I'm sure I'm missing something.

i thought we agreed to disagree on which phish we liked best.

i'm just glad there are people on here now who can talk about this band without being blasted by the indier-than-thou crowd.

Mine are minor:

Radiohead at the 9:30 Club in DC the week OK Computer released. They'll never play a venue that small again.

The Walkmen at the Middle East in Cambridge (MA), opening for the Faint. Their first album was still months away.

Certainly saw a few Dresden Dolls shows before they went national.

Did you see the Walkmen at Start! too? My first time was at that TT's show.

I've missed ALL of the local "legendary" shows (ie: Shannon Hoon pissing on the crowd, Country Dick Montana dying on stage, TSOOL bringing Randy Bachman on stage for "Takin' Care Of Business", Slow closing down Expo 86's New Band Showcase, etc), so there's nothing to brag about. Not that I don't.

Went to a Minus 5 instore and about 75 of us got treated to Stipe and Mills joining Buck to preview tunes from the REM album they were working on at the time (Around The Sun).

Also caught the first North American tours of a bunch of bands, including Elvis Costello, Boomtown Rats, XTC, Joe Jackson, and the Yachts. Also saw the Replacements in '85 with Bob Stinson still in the band, Ramones in '81, Devo in '78, fuckin' Kiss in '76, the Cramps (with Slow) in '86, DOA in '78, NoMeansNo in '78. Too many awesome nights to list. I'll have to check ticket stubs.

No, saw them open for the Faint, then that same TT's show as you at the first and only "official" Boston CMJ meet-up, and then again later at the Middle East again, and I think you were there that time too.

the last (I think) Chamber Strings show, where Kevin Junior broke the sliding door to the Empty Bottle backstage

Jimmy Eat World opening for a friend's band in Champaign - less than a dozen people there
