Dan's Boss: Sorry, Dan: Never saw American Psycho, but I never critique music to the degree of diatribe (no wonky, esoteric, haughty, where’s your head at pontification from me on the arts, no sir.) I like what I hear, see a concert from time to time, buy a few CDs and crank them loudly. Far from being an aficionado . . . but I do have an unfair advantage to a degree. My son being a rocker, former band member, composer, guitar player, studied sound engineering, and buys far too many iTunes, CDs and DVD’s – he tries his best to keep me current. I introduced the lad to modern/alternative rock when he was a youngster and first started playing guitar. We discovered niche bands together like Tonic, Fastball, Guster, Seven Mary Three, Train and Dishwalla before they broke out and made some real dough, etc. All the while we were feasting on early Pearl Jam, REM, Foo Fighters, Soungarden, Deftones and Charlottesville Dave. So my son now returns the favor to old Dad and constantly forces me to listen to new stuff . . . some of which I like, ala Coldplay first three albums. (And, he knows I think Phil Collins bites, except for his Disney movie tunes which are lovely.)

I'm sorry but I'm a bit slow today. Is this whole paragraph irony, a paradox, both or none at all?

See, that's why I could never write satire. I just couldn't bring myself to write comedy like this, and...who knew? It's reality in someone else's world.

Poor guy. What is he, 27? Young'un. You know, one day he's going to wake up and realize that there is life beyond iTunes, and he will remember saying these words, and he will blush.

Hopefully, he'll be alone in his station wagon when he does so.

Didn't the dude say his kids in a band and a sound engineer. I'm thinking kid in his early 20's, dad pushing high 40's to low 50's. Dude seems cool enough, I'll take a Coldplay person over what I have to deal with any day of the week.

Good. Gawd.

You have my deepest sympathies.

See, this is why I don't talk to anyone at work.

Except the Kenyan guy. He makes me laugh.

See that post of mine, per the teacher who professed to be a fan of "underground" music, then recommended the Exies.

It breaks my heart a little to see the boss throwing Guster in there. I know, I know, but still. Woulda been nicer without it.

Disney killed Collins. He started the process himself, but Disney cemented the suck into the suckwalk.

Friend: Hey have you heard of that great new band called the Bravery?

Me: I don't really like them all that much. I'd rather listen to a Live album then that.

Friend: Oh you like Live too? My favorite albums are Secret Samadhi and Birds of Prey.

Cut the boss some slack. He's trying...on some level.

Worst thing anyone can ever find out about you.

Other people think they like music too, but they really just like the radio, with all the knobs and lights and stuff.

One of my managers talks to me about Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Howlin' Wolf, Nick Lowe, the Zombies, etc. He's really great, but he's leaving soon, and i'm left with the biggest asshole manager in the world and a bunch of people I don't know and don't really care to know.

I think i'll find a new job.
