I've hardly heard any of these but I'm already on record as loving that Amerie track.

Good call on "Hounds of Love" and great call on "Hope There's Someone."

Other than that, not bad. I'm usually not really familiar with a lot of the mainstream R&b and Rap songs that always show up.

I take the SPIN definition of "of the year," which can include works that were far and away more noteworthy than anything else if they weren't that well executed. Five years from now, no one save a few of you dorks will remember Antony and the Johnsons, but a helluva lot more people will be bring up what that crazy pedophile tried to pull off. Quality is far from the only factor that makes something stand the test of time. That definition also opens up the door for "My Humps" and putting "Hollaback Girl" @ No. 1 (which I think it should be) but I'm fine with that.

All that said, I think "Trapped..." is a shit-ton of fun. The "holy shit" moment in chapter 8 is absolutely divine unintentional comedy and I've leant the DVD to a half-dozen people in my office, who all love it in a similarly absurd way.

All this kibitzing over its merit is pointless if you haven't seen the whole thing or wouldn't know mindless fun if it slapped you in the face, which I suspect might be the case with more than a few of you.

I read it earlier. When I saw "Hollaback Girl" I wanted to yelp in agony, but I was at work so I waited until I got to the bathroom.

"Hey Now Now" by the Cloud Room would be in my Top 50.

All of this auschwitzing about merit is only in reference to "best" and "single." I enjoyed watching the half of "Trapped" that I saw. It was funny that it was so bad. We all remember Mystery Science 3000. But I still think it doesn't fit this list. All of the other songs - Hollaback, Since You Been Gone, whatever - are on there because they were singles (if you are going to tell me that "single" just means "one song" then you're equally guilty of constricting definitions) that the reviewers valued for the qualities that good singles are known for - no matter how bad the lyrics, etc, there was a great song under it all that kept you coming back. That's just not true about "Trapped." It's funny cause it's bad - great, I agree - but lots of things fit that category that aren't even songs, much less "great" or "singles." "Trapped" is much more like those things than like "Since You Been Gone" or "Rebellion (Lies)." It's like putting "Showgirls" on a "Best Films of the 1990s" list.

But I'm sure I'm just being too "indie" about all of this. Way to break out of the stuffy hipster cell in which the rest of us daily struggle.

I wouldn't have looked in it for singles as its not really a "singles" album, so I'm going to disagree. To me, its just an odd choice for a best single.

Not really a singles person, have always been an albums person. It does seem all right but Stylus seems to have more variety and have only posted 10 so far.

The thing that I have liked, in case you missed it, was some artist’s list, which I think Colin Meloy of the Decemberists has the best list of the lot.

I like his list minus Martha Wainwright. The first song was great, but I didn't like the rest of her album.

i've never heard a single note of antony & the johnsons.
kelly clarkson? puke.
hollaback girl? puke.

glad they have white rose movement and the luomo remix of black dice on there. really surprised they didn't have wolf parade or cyhsy on there strictly because they were all over those albums.

sucky list. but of course, i expected that.
