it's OK. I can see how you thought we elected our leaders democratically by allowing everyone to vote and all.

Honest mistake. I thought that too at one time.

You all, as usual, COMPLETELY missed the point of this. HEgel's and the lot of blind Dubya hating numbskulls.

This speech was intended to do 2 things: Show that we have made progress, AND shift the debate back to "You are with us, or with the terrorists."/"You believe we can and should win this war or you believe we cannot and therefore should not." The fact that you can't recognize this, AND the fact that most of you probably think we can't and shouldn't win is why the Democrats will make nothing but minor gains next year, and Bill Frist or whoever the fuck is gonna be your next president.

I don't knwo who I hate more, Dubya for getting us into this mess, and confusing Iraq with the War on Terror, or the lot of y'all/liberals in general for failing to realize that the 2 ARE INEXTRICABLY LINKED NOW, even if they weren't before.

Bush can afford some (quasi-)humility now, because the recent elections were such a (relative) success. He's no longer on the run, because there are indications that the situation in Iraq is turning around. Massaging his image to be that of the long-suffering Commander-in-Chief will help ensure that, if Iraq is stabilized and democratized, his campaign will be remembered as a successful one: the ousting of an overreaching, warlike dictator in an unstable region, with total casualties on both sides kept under 20,000. By comparison, that'll look like a successful war.

I don't think taking responsibility for something implies that the action was wrong.

Then what's it fucking matter if he's "taking responsibility" for something if it's not a bad thing? YES I AM ACCOUNTABLE FOR SAVING THOSE SMALL CHILDREN, PLEASE DONT BE MAD AT ME.

Haha, that's immediately what I thought of.

Loog, you're right. Though your tactic of "y'all are idiots and I'm not" assumes an awfully lot about "y'all" sometimes.

Of course...and I knew I was generalizing, and I also know exactly how you feel about the whole shebang..which is actually how I feel about it, but I deal in realpolitik, not what should have happened. We're at NOW, now. You know?

Nobody has really mentioned yet (I think) the fact that he's just running the clock out now anyway... why not pretend to care?

No, he needs to rebound his numbers so the Repubs don't lose the Congress. If that happens, he is beyond dead in the water, because the story arc of his presidency will be:
Stole election
Rode high and built majorities
Got re-elected through massive divisiveness
Overreach
Lost congress
Long wilderness period

That's why I try not to get wrapped up in realpolitik lately. I KNOW I can't do a damn thing about Bush and all I'm doing is whining if I think I can. He's with us for the duration, short of something far more damning than wiretapping coming forth.

In the meantime, I'll continue to grit my teeth while people around me go on about the administration's noble intentions and how I shouldn't be against fighting the horrible terrorist death merchants, etc., not patriotic, yadda, yadda, blah-blah, liberal scum.

The fact that I'm a pragmatic moderate independant Christian notwithstanding, the whole shebang has got my insides horrified and repulsed, but complaining about it has little to no effect other than to fuel incorrect assumptions about what I believe.

The actual liberal politik prattle on about being horrified when they don't give a shit about the rule of law any more than Bush does. They want to see him go down because they hate him. I want to see him go down becuse he fucked up getting Bin Laden and mired us in a different war all together. Not because his self-righteousness personality makes me sick, but because his adminstration doesn't think it needs to answer for its actions.

The gut-rotter is that he probably DOESN'T have to answer for them because he'll make the answers up to fit whatever his current need is.

This has gone on in adminstration after administration since the country began, but Bush has the added pisser of acting noble about it and condeming anyone who doesn't accept his b.s. That pisses me off no end.

Add to that list Congressional investigations. If the Dems win back the majority in either house, it's on.

If I'm republican brass, I have to pissed about the Bush Administration. How bad and quickly did they fuck everything up. The Democrats were practically beaten completely down.
