All in all, a much more landmark year than I would've believed, especially considering the rather lackluster years that immediately surround it.

That's funny that you say that because I like both 1987 and 1989 more overall.

Omissions from the omissions:

After All - How High The Moon
Eric Ambel - Roscoe's Gang
Art Bergmann - Crawl With Me
The Del-Lords - Based On A True Story
Dreams So Real - Rough Night In Jericho
The Dream Syndicate - Ghost Stories
Forgotten Rebels - Surfin' On Heroin
The Icicle Works - Blind
Marti Jones - Used Guitars
Paul Kelly - Under The Sun
Lyle Lovett - Pontiac
Nick Lowe - Pinker And Prouder Than Previous
Painters And Dockers - Kiss My Art
Sam Phillips - The Indescribable Wow
The Primitives - Lovely
Reckless Sleepers - Big Boss Sounds
Keith Richards - Talk Is Cheap
Sons of Freedom - Sons of Freedom
The Tailgators - Mumbo Jumbo
Tanita Tikaram - Ancient Heart
Weddings, Parties, Anything - Roaring Days
Lucinda Williams - Lucinda Williams
Zodiac Mindwarp & The Love Reaction - Tattooed Beat Messiah

There's a lot of great albums this year. Without checking the database I would've assumed I'd be voting for either SY or the Pixies, but I also really like the albums by Mary Margaret O'Hara, Michelle Shocked, and Lucinda Williams. And NWA and the Cowboy Junkies are pretty hard to argue about too.

And even with all those albums mentioned, I've still gotta go for the Sons Of Freedom debut. Bonecrushingly awesome. Way ahead of its time. And they were one of the best, most imposing live acts I've ever witnessed.

Utter.

That Paul Kelly record is a delight. I've got the US version of that Painters and Dockers record, under the title "Love Planet". Couldn't vouch for the date at work, but it's a fantastic record. Ups and Downs probably had an album out in '88 as well.

I'm surprised so many of y'all have love for The Trinity Sessions. Great record, though I havent heard it in years----definitely a period piece.

We got into a bit of trouble at a gig in high school that these guys headlined but didnt show up for sound check for when the Cap'N constantly referred to them as "Dreams So LATE" on mic during our set, which devolved into between-song mocking. Seems they had shown up just in time to hear it. They werent happy to be mocked by some weirdos.

Fuck them. 'Rough Night In Jericho' was a pretty cool song though in the day.

Yeah, total blast from the past with that band. I had forgotten about 'em.

I voted Jane's, although I really did like Pixies and Living Colour at the time.

Yeah, totally reminds me of The Jody Grind, Cigar Store Indians, Something and other ATL bands of the era.

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation.

Also really like:

Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
The Pixies - Surfer Rosa
Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation
EPMD - Strictly Business
Ultramagnetic MCs - Critical Beatdown
Camper Van Beethoven - Our Beloved
My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything
Slayer - South of Heaven
Metallica - ...And Justice for All

Even with my knowledge of the mid-to-late '80s being as weak as it is, I've still found a lot to like from this year.

Excellent! I forgot about this one, I tend to think of it more of a comp because of the presence of so many older re-recorded songs. Still good though.

Me too. I went with Jane's because of it's impact on me, but there are several solid choices here.

The only one that grabs me from the poll is Spirit of Eden, so I voted "Other", lots of good one's to choose from...

Lucinda Williams
Lyle Lovetts best (Pontiac)
Wire's best post 154 album - A Bell is a Cup
The Pogues tour-de-force
My favorite Waterboys album

but it comes down to two... Camper Van Beethoven - Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart and The Feelies - It's Only Life.

Camper by a nose.

It was all metal, all the time for me that year (I even bought an Yngwie Freaking Malmsteen tape). Metallica, Queensryche, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Suicidal Tendencies, Maiden all put out classics. Judas Priest released "Ram It Down", and still nobody stopped to think maybe Halford was gay.

From the List - SY by a hair.

Best tour of the Year: Frank Zappa
