maybe it's wishful thinking, but i don't think that's true at all. weather they know it or not i think people do notice those types of things. they might not consciously know why they like one flyer more than another, but i think they notice.

We want them to, but I just don't think they do. Sorta like many of us here don't understand why people don't listen to the shit they are fed on the radio and reflexively gag at Nickelback poetry.

Christ, I'm helping my mother restore a bunch of old family photos, and if I get another 100 dpi scan printed on a shitty inkjet that was low on black that's supposed to be the original I'm gonna run on stage and start shooting people.

Now, if this were a cd cover, brochure or promo kit rather than a flyer (which I'm presuming to be disposable, even photocopies) then I'd definitely chime in for the higher quality.

I think Illustrator is just as easy to learn as P-shop. Sure, getting into the more detailed aspects of graphics work entails a learning curve, but I didn't have much experience with either when I started using them (and I use them every day, though I don't use Quark as much these days).

Despite it being a quirky app, I think Quark is actually fairly intuitive. But I don't sit here and comp books all day, so...

i think once people figure out that text and picture boxes come with runaround already turned on, Quark is pretty intuititve.

i think of it more like things like reverb and compressors.
most people don't know what they are, but they know a well produced song when they hear one.

See this is what I was originally afraid of...

Apparently I need all 3 in some capacity to do really nice stuff...

but, in a sense no.. im not looking to replace the girl I have now...I just wanna be able to whip up some quick stuff now and then on my own....very DIY type thing...

i did a cd mix cover using just photoshop, and what i was able to do with that, wasnt much different, then what I d wanna do....maybe some different type fonts.. but i can create that in theothe rprogram, and just add it over to the project im working on in photoshop, right?

I agree that Illustator is fairly easy to learn and, combined with Photoshop, is all you really need to make flyers. Text editing is super-easy in Illustrator.

I've never tried to use InDesign, but I can attest to the fact that Quark is fairly couner-intuitive compared to Adobe programs. You shouldn't need either unless you're trying to make some ultra-professional print stuff.

I'd recommend both Photoshop and Illustrator as the basic graphics programs to learn, not one or the other. They're good to know for a variety of functions and work well in conjunction with each other.

it kinda seems to me like you're being given some not-so-good advice, unintentionally of course, in that people are telling you that you can get away with using only Photoshop. Which, technically, is true, but believe me, Photoshop is not a good tool at all for text layout, and if you are going to be making flyers, you will run into the limitations Photoshop gives you with text in a hurry. Illustrator is so much better for text and so much easier to work with because it is vector based, and makes it so much easier to scale and move things (like text.) If you're using imagery on your flyer, scan it/make it/scale it/adjust it in photoshop, thin bring your image into Illustrator to put text on it. The text will be so much cleaner and easy to work with and you won't have to worry about pixelation or anything.

This is true, but considering a learning curve here, it would be even easier to use InDesign rather than Illustrator for layout and setting text. Illustrator can be pretty intimidating and there's a lot that will never get used. Plus, if they are just flyers that are going to be done short run and not high quality, the Photoshop job will work. It's not going to be an annual report or anything, but the average joe on the street or looking at the bulletin board in the record store really aren't going to give a shit. That's where the layout is going to set your design apart. From 3-5 feet away, most people will never see the pixelation.

Illustrator is not a particularly intuitive or user-friendly program for those with limited experience. Photoshop and InDesign, however, are much more similar and the chance of the user having even minor experience with another DTP application like PageMaker or heaven forbid even Publisher is much more likely than a passing knowledge of a vector-based app.

Given my grasp of the needs of the situation, Photoshop is the Ford Focus that will get you to work every day, but I wouldn't drive it to grandma's house two states away. InDesign is a more comfortable ride and will make your trip a bit easier and able to accommodate a few more passengers and their luggage. Illustrator is like buying a small plane with no pilot's license.

I had a harder time learning Illustrator, but I think the text tools in Illustrator are pretty easy to use. It's the other stuff that gets tricky to learn.

I'll agree with that 100%.

I just use Photoshop for everything I do, but thats mostly web stuff. I have used it a few times for print flyers and they come out decently.
