There are a ton of things that can make or break this film and one thing is the casting of the kids.

How the heck does this kid top the 1971 Veruca Salt?

This is just another in the myriad examples of fronts for child molestation, look for Burton and Depp's next collaboration "Poo-Poo Bear vs. The Ticklemonster"

I get that reaction a lot.

I'm afraid to watch it because people say it is awesome. But I am afraid it is a memory from their childhood that is no longer valid. Sort of like how I thought "Strange Brew" was an awesome movie and I watched it a couple years ago to re-live good times and I was like WTF? this shit is horrible.

Timmy, I really don't think you would be disapointed. Gene Wilder is awesome, it's got a wicked sense of humor and I've seen it as an adult and still loved it.

Willy Wonka still rocks at 35....

You have to see it TimmyJ.

It's spooky, and amazing, and amazingly spooky!

That industrial espionage guy still creeps me out... )

The original tunnel scene is an absolute freak-out. The new movie has a lot to live up to.

The original is definitely dated. I honestly do not think the oompa loompa scenes have held up at all. Wilder however is absolutely brilliant. His range is immense. One second a charming bright eyed child who never grew up, the next a raving lunatic who absolutely despises children in their greed. His cynciism is completely out of step with the movie but is perfectly played into it so as not to be too distractive.

Overall he wasn't weird, even when everything called him to be exactly that. The movie is absolutely trippy but Wilder himself plays his role so sober, and at times, apathetic. It's hard to see any of this as a child, but from a mature perspective, the layers unravel and the genius is on display.

Wilder makes for a great character study in an otherwise outright goofy movie.

Sadly from what little I have seen of Depp, he holds none of that charm, wishing instead to be one step weirder than his surroundings. Nothing subtle at all.

IMO, CATCF looks absolutely frightening, it'll be the horror movie of the year.

I fail to see how anyone can watch Gilbert Grape or Dead Man and not think Depp is subtle.

I'm not 100% behind the original movie--Wilder's great, but I've always hated that they rewrote and dumbed down the Oompa Loompa songs (they're genius in the book) and turned them into really awkward musical numbers.

I was talking about the preveiw. Depp is usually in top form when he plays an oddball (Benny and Joon, Edward Scissorhands, Fear and Loathing) but I always felt the magic of those portrayals was created from him being the only sane person in an insane world hovever obvious the opposite was true. From the few clips I've seen (and it's nothing to base an opinion on, just a curiosity), Depp appears the most frightening thing in an already frightening world. He doesn't seem to be playing down his role, but rather imposing it forcefully on the audience.

In difference, Wilder played Wonka as a sly, mischevious, but overall lighthearted man. Depp's just a freak. In any case it will be interesting and one of my top movies to watch of the year.
