i have to laugh at the blanket statement that "two spaces isn't visually appealing" - it probably has much more to do with what you're used to than anything else. what's so unappealing about 2 spaces?

Dammit, Haq. It traps white space.

Actually, there is more than just familiarity. It's sort of like the rule that states: The wider the block of text, the more leading that is needed between the lines. It makes it easier to read.

right. well, i think the two spaces is a made up rule by people who are lazy and are trying to get more distance out of fewer words. They want to make writing a page easier by doubling their spacing between sentences.

Age 28. Two spaces, still to this day. Both of my typing instructors were varsity football coaches - I never second-guessed them.

I've always used two spaces, it's what I was taught so I kept it. Personally I find it difficult to read with one space and have noticed it cropping up more and more whenever I get manuscripts to review. I always correct them.

In my case, it's more mental effort to try to restrain myself from double-striking the space bar after a period. Or rather, before capitalizing the first word in the next sentence.

I will say, however, that it doesn't bug me so.

Don't even get me started on when to use En dashes and Em dashes.

Oh, and learn to use ellipsis, people. It's not three periods.

If you seperate a clause with dashes--like this--you're suppose to use the "em" dash, which is the width of an "m" (although when you don't have access to one, like here, you can use a double dash like I have). When you say, e.g., "I'll be gone July 4th-July 9th," you use an "en" dash, which is longer than a hyphen and shorter than an "em" dash.

Nicely done. The easy way to remember is that the En dash (–) replaces the word "to". This is an Em dash (—).

En dash: Alt+0150
Em dash: Alt+0151

Or on a Mac
En dash: Option+Hyphen
Em dash: Shift+Option+Hyphen

You hold the Alt key and hit "0150". The Adobe software recognizes the Mac commands (Alt+8 for a bullet, etc.), so it's not too often I need these.

Did you bother to read that?

Ellipsis: …
Three periods: ...

Look at them. Have someone explain—oh wait, you don't like human interaction. They aren't the same, and at no time does your article say that it is three periods. I guess you don't understand TardSpeak nor English.

Wikipedia Wrote:
Analogously, in printing and writing, the term refers to the row of three dots (…) or asterisks (* * *) indicating such an intentional omission. This punctuation mark is also called a suspension point, points of ellipsis or colloquially, dot-dot-dot

Wikipedia Wrote:
There is no such thing as a "four-dot ellipsis." A period followed by an ellipsis may look like four dots, but they are two separate entities.

Wikipedia Wrote:
Most programming languages require the ellipsis to be written as a series of periods; a single ellipsis character cannot be used.

I don't give out expert advice on Dungeon Mastery, so you should probably stay out of Typography.

When I used to type on a manual Smith Corona I used 2 spaces. Man, was I ever a slow typist.

When I was in college my professors were impressed with the ol' typewriter. They rarely saw manual typed papers. You could read it like braille on the back of the page.

Weird, I just had this conversation (re: double spaces after period) with a work mate yesterday as we were deciding whether or not to get rid of the last typewriter in the building. She and I are of similar age and still fall back on all of our typing class rules (though we are under 40). I am a fan of en- and em-dashes as well. I drive my immediate supervisor crazy with the double space thing though, she is constantly removing them when I'm submitting policy/procedures type text.

I believe I usually use two spaces after every period. I might occasionally use one on message boards like this, but when I write letters or reports for work I use two spaces. I think it still looks better that way.

They are not so lazy to be intentionally grammatically incorrect.

I'm turning twenty-one next week and I double space between sentences. Mostly because English, grammar, spelling, et al. is my forte. I hope to get a job with the grammar police someday.

from my favorite website

http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/errors.html#errors

Quote:
In the old days of typewriters using only monospaced fonts in which a period occupied as much horizontal space as any other letter, it was standard to double-space after each one to clearly separate out each sentence from the following one. However, when justified, variable-width type is set for printing it has always been standard to use only one space between sentences. Modern computers produce type that is more like print, and most modern styles call for only one space after a period. This is especially important if you are preparing a text for publication which will be laid out from your electronic copy. If you find it difficult to adopt the one-space pattern, when you are finished writing you can do a global search-and-replace to find all double spaces and replace them with single spaces.
