lots of good advice on paris so far on this thread

as far as cafes, cool music shops, cinema, it's about all about the latin quarter, boul st. mich area. les jardins de luxembourg are also in that area and ish is right, that's an incredible space to just sit and chill. other great lesser known parks are monceau (metro stop monceau) and in the east of the city near pere-lachaise there parc buttes-chaumont and parc de belleville (metro pyrenees) i HIGHLY recommend taking a metro out there towards the end of the day to watch the sunset over paris from le parc de belleville. incredible view that is often forgotten in lieu of montmartre/sacre-coeur and the tour eiffel but it is almost as breathtaking.

the 4th arrondissement (the marais) has Musee Picasso and lots of cool bars/clubs, but be dressed to impress if you feel like doing that sort of stuff.

Oberkampf is another cool neighborhood that is going through a revival that is very trendy. Cafes, bars, etc.

Go get sorbets on Ile St-Louis at Berthillon. Apparently the best sorbet in the world and I wouldn't necessarily disagree.

Obviously tons of museums. Orsay if you haven't been there is my favorite museum in the world probably but there's also the Museum of Modern Art of Paris (metro Iena) at the Palais de Tokyo which houses some incredible cubist works and Delaunay's majestic "Equipe de Cardiff."

I mean basically, latin quartier and marais are pretty hip. there's stuff to do everywhere.

if you're feeling adventurous, go to a newstand and pick up a "pariscope" just ask the newspaper merchand "eskuh vu zavay oohn pah ree scope par haz ar?" pull out 40 centimes and be prepared to have a listing of everything cultural and cool that is going on in all of paris. goes on sale wednesday and lists everything until tuesday. movies, museums, walks, but the best and coolest thing is listing of classical concerts. on any given night there are free classical concerts being played in churches all over paris. some are paying (and those are usually nicer and in better churches) I HIGHLY recommend looking into going to see one at the Sainte-Chappelle. This chapel is an absolute must see. It's housed inside the Palais de Justice, whcih used to be a royal palace. It is literally the most beautiful room I have ever been inside. Stained glass windows that recount the entire bible. Yes, the whole bible. They give classical concerts in there that cost about 20 euros I believe, and that just might blow your mind.

Most importantly, just walk around, soak it in. Make sure to see the Eiffel Tower do its crazy light show at 10 to the hour.

If you have any other questions, post away.

I only visited Paris once when i was younger so i have no recommendations.

In London i'd recommend the Chelsea market, Trafalgar Square, and the Natural History Museum. The great thing about England is you can take the train anywhere in a short amount of time. I'd recommend going to the Nottingham forrest, Cambridge is beautiful, Oxford...and best of all Portman Road in Ipswich. One of the greatest structures ever built.

You could probably hit up Stonehenge as well. It's not the same ever since they had to rope it off but it still quite cool. Crazy fucking druids.

Greeting from Paris! Just wanted to say thanks for all the suggestions. We've used quite a bit of them so far.

I'll give a full report when we get back in the states.

Right now my legs are super tired and I'm drinking wine until they don't hurt anymore.

Always a good strategy...even when it's not.

that's not going to fix your legs, but it'll help the situation in every other way.

London and Paris are fantastic with plenty to see and do. Lots of good recommendations here already.

Despite popular criticism of English food, London has some of the finest restaurants in the world.

If the weather is good and you're looking to get away from the big city and maybe visit the coast, I recommend a day trip to Brighton http://www.brighton.co.uk/. The beaches are unlike any you might visit in the US. If you can get an express train it's about an hour ride from London's Victoria Station to Brighton. From the train station it's a short walk to Kensington Gardens and The Lanes with hundreds of cool little shops, eateries and pubs. The Royal Pavilion, also within easy walking distance, is a must see http://www.royalpavilion.org.uk/

I have great fondness for Brighton having lived there for 5 years.

have you ever seen members of british sea power walking about?

I've seen a rear admiral or two, but only a handful of discharged seamen.
