in a college setting it would be especially helpful for music majors to quiz on music theory examples, symphonic lit excerpts like from the Norton Anthology of Western Music (every music major has those books and buys those cds and they're crazy pricey), pedagogical video reference for music ed majors...

Ugh, the Norton Anthology... yes, those cds are crazy expensive. And yes, an iPod could have come in handy for studying those excerpts. Especially since I didn't have a working cd player at the time that I was expected to be able to identify the name of the piece, the composer, and the date written, of a 10-second needle-drop-style excerpt of the full excerpt on those cds...

There are some language podcasts that are pretty good, so i don't see what's so different. If you show a picture of a chicken, and the lady says chicken, I'll grasp that the word means chicken.

Yeah but if you were smart enough to program in a book, then you could also program an automatic scrolling function.

automatic scrolling would be cool.

another option: instead of scrolling copy, it could just jump to the next page when you scroll or click forward. this would be great for a flash card type product, so you could jump back and forth very quickly.

also, the iPod screen isn't that much smaller than many flash cards students use every day.

it's gotta be at least as helpful as those laminated "cheat sheets" that they sell in the bookstores that have all the random physics equations and stuff.

I've downloaded some audio language podcasts to brush up on my French. I'd recommend it.

If it was designed FOR an ipod, not adapted to it, and if scrolling weren't an issue, and if it incorporated audio (language study) well alongside visuals, it could be useful. I don't know about popular. But it could be useful. That's one step among many to being successful.

Watching my kids stare at their ipod screens and cell phones, i don't think they'd have any trouble reading small text...
