I'm also still curious what the deal is with that Destroyer album which could make you and Phil (both pop fans at heart) have such differing opinions on it. I haven't heard it yet as I'm a curmudgeon whose usually willing to believe any negative opinions about new music. I'm willing to be persuaded that its worth my attention though.

np: Les McCann & Eddie Harris "Swiss Movement"

Bloor's the swing vote. I just YSIed it to him the other day, so let's see what he thinks...

I like the Destroyer record though I've only listened to it twice all the way through. I am a fan of Dan's voice in the NP's stuff so I wasnt too freaked out by its...well, freakisness in a few of the songs on Rubies. It will definitely get some more listens, but to be honest I've just had waaaaay too many new records to check out this week to be definitive on anything just yet (and I just bought the new Pearl Jam and Springsteen records today to add further to my quandry.)

I'll give it the old college try to be sure.

Billy, I'll forward over the link for Destroyer that Bobbo sent me.

ok, after listening to this and the FB mix that Bloor sent over, i've come to the conclusion that i'm just not a fan of Sir Black's solo material.

As FT predicted, I'm having the exact opposite reaction. ready for the hyperbole? I'm on song 9 of disc 1 and I'm already prepared to say its probably album of the year so far and if its consistent as the first 8 tunes at a minimum #2 overall in the Frank Black/Pixies catalog. I fully expect it to take over #1 very soon. I love the piano, the light horns, his voice has never sounded better and god damn it the song flow is so f'n great. FT is right too, radcliffe is going to friggin' love this one too.

My first listen was pretty underwhelming, but I was also pretty occupied at the time, so I'm going back to it a few times this weekend.

Hey, St. Patrick, do you have Black Letter Days? If not shoot me a PM.

That was what happened to me as well. Once I really gave it attention, I liked it a whole lot better.

I have it, Ill revisit it. Ive never really been captivated by FB's solo stuff, probably because I was a very big Pixies fan growing up, and never was able to appreciate the progression. I havent listend to Days in a while...perhaps tonight.

Dont get me wrong, I didnt hate this, it just didnt resonate with me on first listen.

This was definitely not a grower for me, it was IMMEDIATE. Love at first spin. billy g does a good job of enumerating the reasons this is OPEN QUAL.

Does anyone think disc 1 is considerably better than disc 2 or am I just getting that impression because I listened to disc 1 at home on the stereo and disc 2 at work on my computer at lower volume?

np: Candi Staton "His Hands"

I consciously just listened to disc 2 today because I had been giving disc 1 most of the play. I dunno, I think Disc 1 is probably better but I'm just starting to recognize all of the songs on it, and I'm not even close with D2 so that could change.

There do seem to be 3-4 songs on D2 that sort of run into each other like the downside of a double album. Which I guess is what they are.

Are bobbo and I the only ones blown away by this. I'll admit I almost never listen to disc 2 not because its bad but it's not in the league of disc 1....but disc 1 holy shit. just so awesome....its one of those discs that is just stuck in my player and if it comes on and I was intending to put something else on I just can't bring myself to turn it off. I've listened to it 3 times today as a result. I NEVER DO THAT!!!!

Ill give you Disc 1. I think that by itself, Disc 1 is about as good as anything else this year, but it fades a little into Disc 2.

It took me about ten listens to really get into this, so, a grower on the order of The National's Alligator, which also took me about 10 listens.

edit: still not as good as Black Letter Days

I still haven't heard it, but I think the official release date is sometime this month. I'll probably jump on the praisewagon shortly afterwards. I hope.

I still ain't feeling this. There's a song or two that are all right, but it's not really kicking me in the balls.
