This was so painful live. Like bad performance art more than a campy/nerdy take...

Finally heard the Magic Numbers version of "Crazy In Love" and it's pretty golden.

I'm hoping I can compile enough to make a decent mixtape.

I've heard of those before. I think I heard the '80s disc but it wasn't very good and most of the bands were nobodies.

why dont you just listen to the original ones instead of the bad-indie cover?

Just heard Giant Drag's version of the Chris Isaak song "Wicked Game".

It is awesome.

Dynamite Hack - Gin and Juice

"Gin & Juice" was The Gourds, while "Boyz In Tha Hood" was Dynamite Hack.

BOOYAH.

I'll take the Gourds over the Hack anyday. I'm also sort of sick of half-witted "artists" co-opting recent hits in nerdball fashion to pander to a bunch of social mouthbreathers. Make your own damn music, especially if you're a relatively new artist. Looking at you, Alien Ant Farm.

I'm not anti-cover song—hell, I like quite a few—but this whole practice of indie-fying pop music has been pretty tired for a while now. I may be wrong, but I often get the impression that the covered material isn't often an ode or tribute to the original, but moreso a parody send-up so the Trenchcoat Mafia can have a giggle or two.

I'm a Ted Leo fan, but Kelly Clarkson nailed that fucking song. I'm not a fan of Kelly Clarkson, well, her music much anyway, but what's so wrong with listening to her? Perhaps if you indulged in things the majority of people liked just every once in a while, for a taste, you might understand a little better how people think, how the world works, and why you get left behind.

Falstaff - "Brand New Key" (not a recent inane pop song, but an inane pop song nonetheless)

I worked at HMV the past Christmas season. For about two months, five days a week, nine hours a day, they had nothing but the following albums in rotation:

Madonna
Kelly Clarkson
Black-Eyed Peas
James Blunt
Much Dance 2006
Eminem
Il Divo

So trust me, I am not clueless and secluded in my own little world. I probably know the whole Clarkson album word for word. And while I'll admit that 'Since U Been Gone' was better than 99% of any of those other albums, I'd still rather listen to Ted Leo, Giant Drag, or The Magic Numbers.

Hands down winner ought to be:

Cruel Summer - Ace of Base

Another one that was pretty silly is:

Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm

EDIT: Desparado - Johnny Cash

"Desperado" is always horrible, unless you are waiting for Terry Funk to appear.

Cash's cover of "I Hung My Head" was awesome, though.

first of all,
Crazy in Love is the perfect pop song and will sound good no matter what.

I saw the Divine Comedy play No One KNows by QOTSA live and it was killer.
