I think it was a smooth move. For one thing, by paying for their meal, you're slowly getting the focus back on your mental well-being and helping yourself get better every day (you will be okay with this, anniversary impending and whatnot). You can do this on your own, I have no doubt.

Secondly, you'll probably never have to worry about them EVER invading one of your favorite brekkie spots again. If anything, it's going to make both of them leery about the possibility of running into you, which I think is great-- make THEM feel uncomfortable.

You come off very classy in doing this to her and the new guy. You politely said hello, never caused a scene and covered the check. I can't imagine the guilt she felt after she left the restaurant and how awkward the guy felt after you made him a chump.
