1982 - Antena - Camino del Sol

[img][240:220]http://www.dustygroove.com/images/products/a/antena~~~~~_caminodel_101b.jpg[/img]

Originally recorded as a collection of singles and an EP, Camino Del Sol is the work of French band Antena, who made a brief impact on the electronic music scene between 1981 and 1983. Dubbed "electro-samba" by the Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant, the songs here (including a nearly unrecognizable reworking of Jobim's "The Girl from Ipanema") are a combination of Latin-flavored drum-machine beats and relaxed vocals over a wash of synthesized melody. What's remarkable is how up-to-the-minute these 20-year-old recordings sound--Antena may have arrived too early to become successful, but their resonance can be heard in a slew of modern bands, from Beck's Brazilian excursions to the mellow electronica of Zero 7. --Ben Heege

And...

1982-83 - Marine Girls - Lazy Ways/Beach Party

Tracy Thorn's first band. Also loose bossa nova.

Both reissued fairly recently, both AMAZING.

with a caveat: I have never actually heard the album, but saw these guys open for Meat Puppets that same year. They were very cool.

I've heard the Agitpop stuff, at least the first two records. Their recorded output sucked.

I've only heard "Stick It" but I like that album. Not really enough to strongly recommend someone seek it out, but it says something I guess that I still own it about 20 years later. It reminds me a bit of the replacements.

And I feel confident that Mademoiselle Charli would agree.
