I guess I'll allow myself a little venting here: I hate this city and province with an unbelievable intensity. It's the worst goddamn place. I also hate this shitty little position I have here at the university. I spent over a decade in school and I'm wasting my fucking time here because my wife got a good job in this city and I want to be supportive, but I'll be goddamned if I'm doing more than a couple of years here. I worked way too fucking hard to blow the best years of my post-academic research life in this place.

So let's look at it from a Good/Bad News perspective: The good news is that I won't have this shitty position here past August, so I'm out of work in a very short time. The bad news is that I owe a shitload of student loans. The good news is that it might hasten our exit from this shithole. The bad news is that likely won't happen so I'll have to degrade myself further in some menial position that's far outside my worth and expertise. The good news is that I'm going to Cancun to a conference that will hopefully allow me to make a few research contacts. The bad news is that none of that will pan out because I don't have any infrastructure to support the research program that I want. The good news is that I'm healthy, my wife and parents are all healthy, I'm (currently) not poor and I've got my drinking and smoking under control. The bad news is that I'm still bored in Saskatoon.

That felt good.

Oh, I could regale you with all the injuries I've sustained lately....

2 weeks ago: fell off bike, banged up knee, head bounced on pavement, tore bike gloves, deflated ego

1.5 weeks ago: fell off the wall bouldering at the rock gym, scraped inside upper arm, left massive bruise

1.5 weeks ago: rock climbing at the gym, threw left hand to a pocket hold, felt something in my middle finger on my left hand "snap", came off wall, finger was bruised and swollen for over a week, got x-rays, no broken bones, yet can't make tight fist in left hand. Rock climbing is out for a few months I guess.

today: seem to be starting my period early. grrrrrrr.

oh, another gripe, but kinda sad too.... my dog Bean is losing his hearing big time. He's 12. Yesterday I called him to go outside, and he didn't hear me. I clapped my hands. He heard that, but ran in a different direction. I had to actually go find him and show him that I was trying to get him to go out. Also, he seems to have lost some of his motor skills, as he "slides out" when running/dancing in circles these days.

Well I had a student get his ribcage get stomped in. Admittedly, he stabbed the ribcage stomper in the thigh with a pencil almost an inch and a half. It went down fast, while I was busy stopping another fight.

And then both seventh grade lunch groups had the food fight to end all food fights. The cafeteria is closed for the rest of the day. None of the seventh grade teachers got to eat their lunch. Boy are they pissed.

Wait till the 8th grade classes and teachers find out. Shit is gonna be FUCKED UP.

my mother is visiting in july and she's already driving me crazy. she wanted to see cirque de olay (soleil?). the problem is that i live in chicago, not vegas. american cities do not all have the same attractions. now she wants to see a play. she's used to going to new york, which has broadway. chicago has, like, "wicked" and steppenwolf. when i told her about "wicked", she replied in an email "what is whicked?" how could you misspell it when you'd just read it?! i realize that english isn't her first language, but it's copying and pasting. and because i don't know about the theatre scene, she thinks i don't know anything about restaurants either. and going out to eat is my wheelhouse. at least she'll only be here for 24 hours and i'll probably be sleeping for 6 and working for 8 of those.

The wife/gf complaints in this thread are awesome.

I have evrything and nothing to complain about: i.e., EVERYTHING pisses me off, and I have no desire to do anything to fix the situation.

They're closing the cafeteria for the 7th grade from now till the end of the year (8 more days), which doesn't seem like it's much, but that means the 7th grade teachers now lose their own lunch. They're considering shutting down the cafeteria for everyone. It was nacho day. I saw a lunch table that didn't have one square mm of formica that wasn't covered in ground beef and cheese. Kids were doused in chocolate milk and nachos, hot dog fixings, tater tot bits... There's no air conditioning, so by the end of the day, these chocolate milk covered satan worshippers smelled like spoiled milk, sweat, hormones, and the occasional mist of axe bodyspray which smells like boiled ass anyways.

Even though I have been having a great social life recently, I just got my summer payment on my fellowship, and my band practices have been going very well recently, I have been having a dismal black cloud looming over my head for no good reason the last couple of days. When I'm hanging out or on a date, I'm fantastic, but when I'm left to my own devices I just feel bleak bleak black. No good reason why. Stupid brain chemistry. Getting NOTHING done in the lab so far this summer.

3:37PM . . . good time for a beer?
