"Summer"

Never heard it. Is it worth buying that EP for? I'm not really a MM completist.

There's some other good tracks on the EP, but probably not worth it, since EP's tend to be expensive for their length.

The list of songs is a good primer. If you can put all of the hype machine out of your mind, give a really close listen to Moon & Antarctica- lyrically one of the best records ever IMHO.

I dont know about best ever, but it is damn good

Re: Modest Mouse

Drinky, yes this is the only Modest Mouse album I've heard.

Yeah, it probably doesn't matter. Even a lot of longtime Modest Mouse fans don't like GNFPWLBN, but I think it's pretty good. You might be able to find some songs from the older stuff that you like more than "Float On", but I don't know if it would be worth the effort for you. The dude's voice has always sounded that way, and he used to do his signature guitar harmonic thing (which is cool but gets monotonous) on like every song from first two albums.

Some song highlights (in my opinion) from older MM albums:

Dramamine
Tundra/ Desert
Heart Cooks Brain
Doin' the Cockroach
Styrofoam Boots/ It's All Nice on Ice, Alright
All Nite Diner
Whenever You Breathe Out, I Breathe In (Positive, Negative)
Gravity Rides Everything

Those are more or less chronological.

Good list of highlights. I am one of those people who doesn't like the new one as well as their earlier stuff. It is not bad, I just prefer the roughness of their previous stuff.

It probably appears that way to the band, too. I mean, 'hit songs' are hard to write. So if they write only one, they still feel obliged to fill out an album with material, rather than just put out a single and call it a day/career.

And no, it does not apply to every album. Just some recent ones that come to mind that do not qualify for this thread:

Notwist, Neon Golden
Franz Ferdinand
Pitchshifter, www.pitchshifter.com
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus
Neurosis, The Eye of Every Storm
Matt Elliott, The Mess We Made

Okay, back on topic, there are a few:

Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man, Out of Season -- now don't get me wrong, I love this album to death, but the last track is such a wonderful climax, that it really overshadows the rest of the album until you've listened to it quite a few times.

Seal does this on practically every album -- and releases the good ones as singles.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Nocturama -- "Babe, I'm On Fire"
